My three year old has been getting very hyper and very overwhelming when she gets tired. When she gets sleepy she'll start running around the house, throwing toys everywhere, screaming at her sister, and jumping on everything in site (even me). Does anyone else experience this with their children?

This does happen fairly often, though it's more a boy thing than a girl thing. The easiest way of keeping it from happening is for the child to have a regular (and early) bedtime, also a grand way of giving the adults two or three child-free hours in the evening. I'd try giving this little girl a light supper at 6 pm and a bath at 7, then putting her in bed and reading her a short story and saying goodnight by 7:30. This is a routine to gradually slow the pace and calm her down by the time she should be going to sleep. Good luck!

Oh yes ! Been there, done that. I think all children and even some adults, tend to fight sleep. They get anxious and of course, "overtired". And the ole case of the 'I don't want to miss out on everything'. The best thing to do is lay down with her until she settles down. Set the house in a calm down mood. Dim all the lights, turn down all t.v.s or music. Maybe even play some classical music real low. Not 15 minutes ago I put my grandson to bed the same way. He's almost 3. Sometimes I'll rub his back for 5 or ten minutes and that helps....
Good luck ! !

My 6 year old step-son does this too. The only thing we can figure out is that he is doing his best not to go to sleep. He doesn't want us to think he is tired. He wants to stay up later, but if we think he is tired he knows we will send him to bed. I think this is a normal thing that some kids go through. I'm sure your daughter will eventually get over it. But she is just trying to stay up. She wants to be a big kid... We told my step-son that he has a set bedtime, it didn't matter if he was tired or not, he had to go to bed at a certain time. That helped a little, because he knew being hyper wouldn't help him any. Good luck!

Yes I did I used to call it running from the sleep monster. When a child feels that they are getting sleepy they turn on the energy to keep the saleep monster away.

Absolutely. You'd think they drag around the house sucking their thumb, but nooooooooo they get hyper. After a total of 7 kids, I still don't get that.

Oh YES, My that is how I know my Grandson is ready for a nap or needs to go to bed early. Just tonight he was running around screaming ,climbing and generally getting on my nerves. I sent him to bed and he was asleep before his pillow had time to get warm.

Yep, but as long as she does "go to sleep" I wouldn't worry about it! My son is just happy to get into bed at night, he knows how good it feels and I think he feels independent, too:)

yes my kids do that 2. the doctor said they do that because they have to much energy all day and they are not getting enough exercise and that they have to get rid of it before they can go to sleep

I know my dog goes crazy when she's tired. I don't have any kids yet so that's the closest I can relate to you. But I know my nephew gets really cranky when he's tired.
