Speaking in tounges is something i've done since I was 13 yrs old. Yes it is still very much done. Mayb the reason u can't do is b/c u haven't given that situation 2 God completely. Pray 2 God 2 put it on u the desire and the want for it. That is something very speacial between u and God. Tounges is a language the devil can not understand so it is important 2 have that annointing on u. I will pray 4 God 2 give u the wisdom 2 understand such a priveleded annointing. I hope I could help. God Bless u!

The actual talking in tongues that was done by the apostles was so that when they spoke all those present would be able to understand them in the language they spoke, no matter how many different language groups were present. While some Churches still promote the idea that this gift continues down to today, the Bible indicates that even if a person were to talk in tongues, it would be worthless babble unless someone was able to translate it for the instruction of all present.

Speaking in tongues is to build up the inner or spirit man. It is also a prayer which is prayed when you really don't have the best answer, like turning it over for God to do the best thing. Some denominations feel that it is the first evidence of having the Holy Spirit inside of you, I do not believe that as it is said in Acts that it is a gift and is not necessarily the only evidence of having the Holy Spirit. It definitely helps and builds up your spirit side. if you really want tongues, simply ask God for it. I spoke in tongues purely on accident, didn't really seek it, it just happened

Some Church groups believe it "proves" the holy spirit is in you (receiving the Holy Ghost by the evidence of speaking in tongues) . Sadly this pressure to "prove" has lead to people "faking it" to fit in.

Speaking in a tongue can also mean speaking Spanish, French, Korean, etc without knowing the language. (such as what happened at Pentecost)
I know of one case in our Church (Lutheran) where a young lady that did not know Russian was in chapel praying and a visitor (from Russia) entered heard the prayers in perfect Russian and after service started a conversation in Russian with the girl and of course realized she didn't speak any Russian.

I share this line of thinking with you... You don't need to "prove" to me - that the Holy Spirit is in you - that is between you and God. That you are part of the extended family of God it will be visible to me in what you do, say, act etc. ....now as a Lutheran...
Lutherans do not feel speaking in tongues is "proof" as it is also know that the demons and Satan can influence people to speak in tongues as well. That is why an interpreter of tongues is also needed - if it's a message from God or about God, I want to hear all of the message. If it's not... I'd really rather not listen to any of it, interpreted or not.

I have thought quite a bit about talking in tongues and I think that people can be filled with the holy spirit and they can purposely talk in an incomprehensible "language" to demonstrate how profound their connection to god is. I believe that if god wants to speak through us the message would be clear, and it could probably be vocalized in a language that the speaker (messenger) understands. I think that it is interesting how a group of people can convince each other that this is appropriate behavoir and that it means that you are close to god. With that said I do believe that each person should be able to choose how they practice, or celebrate their spirituality, and anything that helps them feel closer to god, the truth and pure and compassionate living is a good thing.

odd, i've been doing that for years, never heard of it being a requirement in a church though.

There are many that talk in tounges, and some of them are crazy, others are not.

I met one such person that sang in tounges with almost every breath, I responded in tounges, and her expression changed from joy to fear, and then back to a different joy, and she always came to my line after that and was rather a pleasent person noone else wanted to deal with.

Not all churches believe in that, only the more extreme fundamentalist churches. Try some different churches like Methodist, Unitarian, or Lutheran. You will probably feel much more comfortable there.

i think that it es happen...but only very rarely and not as frequesnt as some religions would hav eyou believe. It is not a prerequisite to go to heaven. It is a gift/grace that only a few will receive and probably none that we will ever hear about...so if someone is going around and advertising this charism, beware!

It is still done... but you need to understand what tongues is ... Biblically...

First off - let's find the biblical definintion of "tongues"

Acts 2:4. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that EVERY MAN HEARD THEM SPEAK IN HIS OWN LANGUAGE.

After reading this ... Are you sure you were given a "word" in tongues? If so, who is it to be spoken to?

Why do you feel it is necessary to speak in tongues?

1 Cor.12:30. Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

Tongues will cease --

1 COr 13. 8. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

Tongues are for our self - pride

1 Cor 14.4. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

What is the good of tongues --

6. Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

Search your Bible thouroughly the answers are there.
