felines are much more idenpendent and strong willed then dogs, they dance to the beat of their own drum and like to be on their own...its usually in the case where dogs already have a well used name other than cats who just have one on their collar for acknowledgment. It would be no diffenece if you did say doggy doggy doggy but kitty kitty kitty just rolls off the tounge better, and its what people are used to, i guess you could say its a universal habit. But there isnt much significance to it...
i have six cats myself...

Yes, dogs do respond to the sound of their names. Cats will too, if people would take the time to actually use their names when speaking to them. Remember, your pet doesn't really know it's name, it simply recognizes that this particular sound you make is generally associated with food, petting, etc. It think most people just assume cats don't learn their names since owners don't typically take the time to teach them "tricks"
Doggy, doggy, doggy doesn't really roll of the tounge, but kitty kitty just kinda flows. Alot of people call dogs "puppy" though.

My cats know their name. Maybe people do not spend enough time with their cats talking to them. A cat is not something you just have around just to have one. They are part of your family. Here is the answer to your question:
Dogs come when you call them, Cats take a message and get back to you when they want to.

i like both. I truly have a domestic dog and a cat. i like cats better effective although. They clean themselves and do not eat out of the trash and they don't poop all around the abode. They use the muddle field. canines are cool too although. i'm allergic to cats. I truly ought to take benadryl to save my cat.

I usually call my cat by rattling the food in his bowl. As the previous answerer pointed out, cats are not known for their desire to please.
