The big deal is in the detail of the work; the artist himself; the fact that no one knows who the hell she actually was and the speculation still abounds on that; and the fact that she has that little smile on her face. Posing for paintings took a very long time, and to be able to hold a smile of the same type for thsat long is an astounding feat. So, did she actually smile like that, or was her mouth just upturned naturally in that smile? And what did that smile mean??

If you need to ask, I cannot explain fully. Leonardo Da Vinci was one of the three greatest painters of the High Renaissance period, along with Raphael Urbino and Michelangelo Buonarotti. That would make him one of the ten gratest painters of all time. Someone dismisses this great painting with a dumb, insulting phrase and shows his ignorance. That's like Billy Bob Thornton speaking of Shakespeare and his quote "f%$@#&g language". I do not like the "Mona Lisa" that well, but I can appreciate that it is a great painting by one of the ten greatest painters who ever lived.
