Noelle and Kay's answers are great. The rest leave something to be desired. It is called Disassociatve Identity Disorder. It is typically caused by repeat severe physical or sexual abuse. It is a controversial subject and there are different takes on it. It is considered an official personality disorder by the American Psychiatric Association. Personality disorders in general are very treatment resistant and are never really "cured". But DID is treatable and treatment can help the person live a more comfortable functional life. Another popular myth is that it is a form of Schizophrenia but it is not and it is not at all related to Schizophrenia. Hope this helps.

Yes... but it's currently called Dissociative Identity Disorder.
There are many controversies regarding the disorder- like how it happens? are the multiples individual people or just fragments of one person's mind? When did the personality split? Existance of the actual abuse? Is the abuse made up? Is it really just someone who is schizophrenic? Should the personalities be integrated? Is there such thing as Natural Multiple Personality? Should they be treated as one person or complete individuals?
This is an extremely complex diagnosis... not so rare as we think it is, but complex definately. I dated someone with DID... it didn't really work out- I found that he was far too high maintenance for me to deal with, considering I myself am high maintenance.... I learned a lot about DID when dating him, about each of the people inside.... talked about theories of why since he believe he was natural born with no evidence of trauma or abuse. It's very difficult.
Infact i just finished watching Sybil- I suggest you either rent it of read the book, also there was a movie called The Three Faces of Eve. You can easily find literature out there on it.
Does it exist? Yes- the real questions lie behind why and exactly what and how it works. But yes, it does exist.

i dont imagine so. if one's habit is categorised to this variety of so stated as situation its by using the indisputable fact that someone change into taught at an early age to act in yet otherwise in direction of a few variety of abuse, which shows something that individuals would imagine call multi-personality. ask your self this question, if someone had one of those situation would or not that's a hostage situation if that man or woman threatened to commit suicide? aspect is you're both insane or sane basic or no longer basic.

Yes there is!! We all have multiple personalities and if you can't use them properly because you lack self control, or low self esteem, angry at the world, not happy with yourself, not happy with your job, not happy with the current relationships in your life, then yes you also might have mulitple personality problems. I don't consider it a disease or something that is wrong with you, ya just have to prioritize the important things in life and focus on what brings you joy. If you can do that, then life will bring on a whole new meaning.
