That's a question you need to ask your family doctor or nurse. Until you can do that, you need to wash it with plain soap and water. Let the water (gentle stream...pretty cool temperature) run over the wound for 10-15 minutes. Do NOT use peroxide....the fizzing action only pushes any bacteria present deeper into the wound, and also causes damage to the tissues on a cellular level. (Something which has been proven over and over again, so it baffles me why some nurses will still tell you to do it.) Don't use rubbing alcohol, either. It takes 15 minutes of direct contact for it to kill most bacteria....and it will sting like heck. It's used for cleaning the oil and dirt off of intact skin prior to injections....not for disinfection. Something like betadine is a much better choice, which is why it's used as a surgical scrub. But if you don't have that, not to worry...the soap and water by itself should be just fine.

Your puppy not having had its shots yet has NOTHING to do with whether or not you'll get an infection, however. It has to do with the bacteria in his mouth, which has nothing at all to do with his shots. (Good thing it wasn't a cat, because they have a particularly nasty bacterium that lives in their mouths.) Are you up to date on your tetanus shot? (That doesn't come from an animal's mouth...it's in the environment...but can enter through any puncture wound.)

If you're worried about rabies, the risk is likely minimal from a puppy, depending on its age and lifestyle. Again, a question for your MD to determine from looking at your wound. But as a veterinarian, I can tell you that in the rare event your puppy DOES have the rabies virus in his saliva, doing as I said above will inactivate the virus within minutes. So go do it NOW. (Yes, I am legally allowed to give that advice to humans, even though I'm not an MD.)

just because your puppy doesn't have it's shots has no barring on whether or not your wound will be infected. has everything to do with the bacteria in a dogs mouth that can or could cause an infection. punture wounds are the worst for getting infected, because there is no way for drainage except the original hole. keeping it clean just as you would any other cut you will be fine. if you haven't had a recent tetanus shot I would recommend one. but as long as you keep the wound clean again you will be ok. most puncture wounds can't and won't be stitched. get your puppy's shots so he doesn't get parvo or something else. most dog diseases are just that, not all are communicable to humans.

good luck

Give the wound a good rinse under water for about three minutes, then put an antiseptic or betadene on it it, is unlikely you will catch any dog illnesses but it could get infected don't panic!!!!
I live in Austalia and don't know of any illness that transfers from dog to human I am not sure where you are from so maybe you should ask a doctor???? good luck

as long as there are no signs of rabies in you animal! which would be clearly known....

you shouldn't have anything to worry about, there are not a whole lot of diseases humans can catch from dogs. Just clean out your cut like you would any other one, peroxide or rubbing alcohol, some neosporin and a band-aid!

Every Pup Ive ever had has broke the skin on my hand at one time or another(grandma raised them when I was a kid),

Just be sure to wash the dog spit off before making yourself a sandwich because that's just gross, otherwise relax and have fun with your pup

I'm more concerned about the poor puppy, stuck with owner taste in his mouth. Give him a nice chew bone to help get rid of that flavor!

If your dog is not sick then don't worry about catching a dog disease but you should get a tetanus shot because bites are puncture wounds.

Just wash it out good with peroxide and it should be okay. Get the pups shots started for its own health.

As long as the dog is healthy and you washed the wounds with an antiseptic or dissinfectant when it first happened, you should be fine.
