The exchange of ideas is the whole point of communication. Someone states an idea, someone else reads it, they state their idea, and hopefully both parties learn something. Of course, that's the ideal, and it doesn't always work out that way, but the alternative is to retreat to one's own small, static world, where they remain alone and stagnant.
Yes, some people do treat their opinions as absolute capital-T Truth. That kind of person has stopped living, for all intents and purposes. They have decided that they have figured it all out, and nothing anyone says or does is going to change their mind. They are never going to learn anything, ever again, because they already "know" it all. All that lives changes with time, and if it stops changing, it is dead.
But for the rest of us, there is still a lot to be gained from debating ideas. The point isn't to win someone over, or prove them wrong, but to learn more about what you yourself think is true, and consider other possibilities that you might never have thought of on your own.

Not all Christians are pushy, I for one, won't push you to believe anything, since God didn't force me to accept him, who am I to make or try and make you belive? I didn't believe in God Because I wanted too, as much as I believe because it was a gift given to me by God to believe.
And I don't think all Athiests are pushy either, they just don't want to have to answer to anyone except themselves. It makes it easier for them to believe that they are in control. And most things are possible because of them!!!!!
However, be you Christian, or Athiests or other, your opinion is only going to carry so far!!!!! It's the reason for the physical world, we use it as a way to try and turn our opinions into facts.
Hope this Helps.

Atheists, in general, are not trying to convert Christians, or convince them that they are wrong. For the most part, that is hopeless... the christians have already demonstrated that they are immune to such irrelevancies as facts, logic and critical thinking. Heck... that's why they're christians, in the first place. But we realize that there are some people who are genuinely interested in learning, with open minds and intellectual honesty. It is the moral responsibility and ethical duty of rational people to intervent and protect those vulnerable minds from being contaminated by Bronze Age myths, willful ignorance and self-delusion.

Conversation is not pointless.
Unless you're a fatalist, as you appear to be with your statements here.
But to answer your question: Christians and atheists continue the conversation sometimes because that is what people do: converse with each other. If you are under the impression that conversation is useless and that no one ever changes their mind, you are wrong. My mind has sometimes changed as a result of dialogue with others. Just because yours may not does not mean that others don't have the experience.

If only your opinions matter to you, how will you ever grow? There are atheist who are open minded and there are also people who are undecided. My role is not to convert them but to speak the truth in kindness and love. I'm better at the truth part than the kindness and love part. But as I continue to do this, I get better. Hopefully, along the way, some people will be converted, but that is secondary.

But it is not all opinion. That's subjectivism. There is such a thing as objective knowledge. Science is all about discerning objective knowledge from opinions and believes. And science is based on a secular, naturalistic way of looking at life. So is atheism. Isn't that interesting?

The atheist do it to aggravate the Christians (and a lot of times it works), and the Christians try to witness or preach the word of God to the atheist (which we are suppose to do).
The atheist get a kick out of how far they can push the Christians, see how mad they can make us. See if one of us will blow up at them and act un-Godly.

It's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of faith. We as Christians are spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ so the ones who don't know him can have a chance to be saved before it's to late. If they choose not to believe, no one can force them.

Christians teach others and whoever listens, will follow. Atheists don't try to convince you on evolution because they hear it in science class and believe it. Few ever try to understand everything to see for themselves if something make sense. It's not really a battle. In both, if you don't teach it, no one will learn it. That's why they quote quote "try to convert"
