what about putting her on one of those movable leashes, that follow a close line that way she'll have a broader area to move around in. maybe start her on one of those and work your way to a basic leash. btw, I think youre wonderful! thank you for saving her!!!

Patience could be the key to your problem. Abused animals can see the leash as a new form of punishment or remind them of previous abuse, so you'll have to work extremely hard to dissociate the leash from those bad memories. Whenever you put the leash on her, give her a treat or pet her alot. Let her get comfortable with the leash, and she'll eventually move on her own I think. Whatever you do, don't let her think she's the dominant creature in the relationship as that will put any training progress to a halt.

Hi, there are a lot of people interested in helping with your situation and I've read very good answers. My suggestion is to take your girl out with another pup/dog walking. Have them get aquainted first, play in the yard for example. As dogs are pack animals she may well walk along side another dog she's befriended without even realizing the leash. We just trained 9 pups, some were hesitant but all walked very well with mom. Good luck, you've done a worthy thing.

She was tramatized since birth. You gotta be really patient and give her time. Shes not going to just move into a new house and be ready to walk around the block after being locked in a tiny cage and treated like dirt. Just keep playing with her and gaining her trust. Let her run around the house and get used to it first before you bring her into the outside world. Tempt her with food to try to get her to go outside like you are doing and if it doesnt work then no big deal. Eventually she will become comfortable enough to trust you and walk outside on a leash. Good luck with her!

Put a short leash on her in the house so she can used to it. The idea of it being on and you trying to walk her might be scary. Once she gets used to it with you holding on to it in the house, she won't fear it outside. Play with her while she is wearing the leash.
We had a foster dog with the same problem. After three days of going around the house with the leash, she let us walk her outside with it. She was afraid of walking on the sidewalk, but that was another issue all together. (country dog never had been in the city)

Oh! I agree with sweets. What a great life she has ahead of her.
I have 1 brindle female I've had since birth and two other Danes that were rescues. 1 was basically being used for puppies, the other was ditched in WV and left roaming the streets.
It's definitely a 'day-at-a-time' project, but in the long run... it's worth it.
Thank you for having such a big heart and best of luck with your new baby!

let me tell you what really works.i got my poodle when she was 6mos and she wouldn't walk on a leash either.you have to get her used to outside.take her out side when ever you can with the leash on her and encourage her to walk.once she's used to the leash and being outside you should have no problem.my dog is so used to being outside all i have to do is show her the leash and she'll sit in front of the door until i put it on her.that also tought her what sit meant.when i got my pup she would sit in one place like a tree i just planted, but now she runs through the house like her head is choped off and she chews on everything(including me).so just take the advice i gave you and see how that work.

Just pull on it.I'm not trying to be mean;this is what my vet told me to do when I had the same problem.I took the puppy out on her leash, and pulled so she had to come.As soon as she started moving ,I said "Good Girl,Abby!".and then started running and talking to her all the time.In about 15 minutes she was over her leash-phobia and was trotting happily along with me.Hope this works for you and bless you for saving the poor pup.

It's a very sad thing to see animals abused.
try putting her collar & lease on & let her just drag it around the house w/u watching her. Do this a couple times each day. After a week u pick up the lease & go where she wants to go...be sure to give her a good treat for doing this. Then the next week you pick up the lease & pull her to go w/u.
Treat: get u some chicken livers. Boil them adding a pinch of salt til done. Give her little bites...your not feeding her, ur treating her. Freeze rest of livers & defrost as needed. Dogs love chicken liver/stay off the bacon. Email me & let me know how your doing. :-))))
