He motions like he is constantly biting out at a fly. He is whining and he won't settle down (i.e he keeps walking around). He acts like he wants to throw up and did indeed bring up a little bit including grass. Is he choking, what can I do to help him? When do I bother the vet?

He could have eaten something, like a stick, that's lodged itself in his throat or digestive tract causing him pain. Or he may have a bad hair ball. I'd definitely go to a vet if he's like this in the morning, or if any blood shows up.

Your dog could have several things wrong. An allergy, a string or a pin stuck in his throat, a half chewed stick stuck in his throat, or a twig, leaf, sock fuzz, a bad tooth that hurts, or even heartworms.

Give him a complete mouth check to make sure nothing is stuck in his mouth. If he lets you pull his mouth apart and then do a visual check upper and lower, then run your finger up and around upper and lower gumlines. Get someone to hold a flashlight for you and see what you can see (if anything down your dog's throat.) If you can find nothing in your own examination that explains your dogs biting, whining and restlessness -- call your vet.

FYI: If this can wait until morning, wait. ER vet bills generally charge you about 100.00 for walking into the clinic after regular hours on top of the ER checkup and treatment.

Good luck.

If you haven't already taken him to a vet....try looking in the roof of his mouth. He may have gotten something stuck there.

Go to the vet NOW. My dog died of kidney failure. He was vomiting and losing lots of weight. To this very day, I hate myself
for not recognizing the signs. I miss him dearly. He died. I absolutely hate myself and blame myself to this very day.

Go to the vet NOW! He might have bloat.

Edit: Never mind, if he had bloat and you didn't take him he's dead now.
