I have had really bad service a few times on vacation this year. I did not say anything or make a big scene while I was there - I didn't want to cause a commotion or ruin the evening for myself or my guests. But when I got home, I typed up a polite letter explaining in detail what happened and why the service was so bad. I mailed these letters out and I have gotten very nice responses. One restaurant (with particularly horrendous service) also admitted that it was in the wrong and none of the staff from this year will be coming back for next year. Even if nothing is done, at least my complaint was acknowledged and I received an apology.
Also, I plan to "name drop" last year. When I arrive next time I plan to say, "Hello. Is Mr. ___ here? I just wanted to thank him for his wonderful letter of apology?" Just doing that ensures better service the next time around.

If it happens at fast food place, probably not a whole lot since you usually get what you paid for. At a nicer restaurant, you get em where it hurts which is always the tip. I'd be too afraid to do anything before my food was served for obvious reasons. Also, if it was outrageously bad service you might consider writing a letter to management and take down names of the offenders.

Well we can look at it this way...We must all put ourselves in ones other shoes to know what they might be feeling....If I was treated poorly, then I can always say something like this " I'm sure your having a rough day as I am, but I came here today cause maybe just maybe I can get some friendly smiles from here, cause I heard service was pretty darn good here." Then that might change there attitude towards the whole scene. So why fight it when you can yourself fix it too. Remember everyone has a job to do and even if there job is to give good service, you yourself must also be an understanding customer.!

Bad service is unacceptable. If it is food service, of course I wait until I get my food, then my tip will reflect the service they provided. It it is fast food, I may speak to the manager, but it has to be really bad. For any poor service (market, retail stores, etc.) I will always get the persons name, and see a store manager right then. If I am unsatisfied with the manager's response, I file a complaint with the corporate office of the company. Usually, the store manager does not want it to go to that level, so they will try to resolve the issue right then.

depending on the establishment, i have reacted in different ways.
1. left a 2 cent tip
2. spoken directly to server
3. spoken with management and expressed my displeasure
4. declined recompense from management
5. accepted recompense from management
5. sent letter-email to main office
there is no right or wrong way to deal with bad service, just don't make an azz of yourself.

Pay the check and leave it is not worth doing anything more than telling the host the service stinks and what you mean by that. Of course you may not want to go back if you tell the host anything.

when I order my food anywhere It uselly comes wrong because I never order off the menu. Either I leave stuff off or add stuff. I have sent so manythings back and had to wait. But there tip isn't very good or they don't get one at all
