I wanted to use one of those online booking websites to get a hotel room, but at the moment I don't have a credit card, only a debit card. The website that I wish to use asks for a credit card. Would there be any problem with me using my debit card in its place?

I have used debit cards to book rooms, travel and lately even a U-Haul. As far as I know, companies just run it through like a credit card. Is there a MasterCard or Visa symbol?

Seems like the problem with renting a vehicle is the amount of money you need in your account as a "deposit." They put a hold on credit until they get the car back, so if your bank account is low, could be an issue.

You can always apply for a credit card where you need to make a deposit - your credit comes from your money, but it does give you some benefits, I suppose.

You really should go through a travel agent. If you don't have a credit card you might have problems with checking in. I know that debit cards have Visa/MasterCard logo that might not matter depending on the hotel.

This is one of the many reasons you need to go to a professional. In the event of a problem, no travel agent can or even if they could probably help you. Why would they?

By the way you can't rent a car with a debit card, ever.

Just wanted to edit this after reading another posters response. She indicated that "As long as you have enough in your bank account then you can use a debit card". This is NOT true. NO Debit cards, I have yet to find a car company that will allow this and they do have ways of knowing if it is a debit card. Credit card and that is it or no car rental. You can usually pay for a car rental with cash after you return the car, however not before. It has to do with taking a 15,000 dollar car off the lot....they tend to get a bit picky!

I know you weren't asking about cars, but seen as you were saying that you only have a debit. Figured this might be useful info in the future if you are wanting to rent a car. Also you have to be over 25. Some places will let you rent a car from 21 - 24 for a premium price which averages to about $25.00 extra a day. A high price, trying to discourage younger travelers from renting at all really.

Call the hotel itself to make sure you can use the debit card with them. Make sure it has a Visa or MasterCard on it.

Make sure you have plenty of cash in the bank. They will put a big hold on the card on top of your actual charge.

Yes you can use the debit card at car some rentals but not all.

Outside of the US. It should be no problem because of the MasterCard and Visa honor all card policy.

If you do go out of the US. Make sure to notify your bank(s).
This is so your bank will expect unusually transactions.
Some banks require card to be activated for international transactions.

No problem, but know that if you are using one of the wholesale websites that many times they bill your card at the time you make the reservation and it is NON-refundable.

You are much better off to go directly to the hotel's website and book there ... most often you can cancel up to 6pm on the date of arrival without penalty. And most often they don't charge your card until arrival.

Know what you are agreeing to on those sites.
