The main reason is to see. Some people though are short sighted some are far sighted, some have stigmitisms. Some loose thier sight later in life, some are born with poor eyesight, it may be genetic. Some people wear contacts to change the color of thier eyes, some people only wear glasses because they're in fashion now.

Being able to see might be a good reason to wear glasses or contacts.
Of course, there's always the obvious social benefit of wearing glasses. Aren't they just so charming...

I am nearsighted so I have to have glasses. I walked up to many an ugly man when I was single! I ALWAYS wear them now!

Because they want better vision pretty much sums it up (poor refraction or astigmatism).
Except for people who want to pretend to have a different eye color with colored contacts or want UV protection with sunglasses.
