when cops train to use the taser why do they have to be hit with it? When they train to use their guns they dont have to get shot! So why do they have to get tased?

You do have a very valid point. However, the Taser is designed to be non-lethal... like pepper spray, not like a gun. Also, unlike a baton, it is designed to leave no lasting injuries, especially with a training probe/cartridge.

There are two things gained when an officer that carries a Taser has been hit with the Taser:
1. Their courtroom testimony in a criminal or civil (i.e. suspect injury) case will be personal, not heresy. That officer can say what they actually felt and what the short term and long term (should be none) effects were. Otherwise, you'd have to get someone from Taser Int'l company to come out and testify on your behalf. If you "ride the wave" and choose to get hit, definitely keep a videotape of the training for exactly this purpose.

2. I'm sure you know of some cops that aren't that accurate with their handguns. It's worse with a Taser. Being hit in training will give an officer that accidentally gets hit on the street the increased ability to deal with the pain and hopefully regain calm.

They know what harm a gun can cause but they can't say the same about the taser until they've been tased.

A lot of cops are clean cut types who have never been in a serious fight - the kind who can pass a background investigation - they have to be taught that they are not made of glass, so when a creep pops 'em in the jaw, or worse...they will keep fighting to victory.

I was a bit of a hooligan, so defensive tactics was my favorite part of mandate school - but one thing criminals should never do (but do anyhow) is underestimate the fighting abilities of that cop who looks like a nerdy, Dudley Do-right...because he will be the one with the Bruce Lee moves.

Well it lets the officer know what it feels like. That way when a person who the tase says that it hurts and that the cop does not know what it feels like they can respond in kind. Furthermore it lets a officer know just how much force to use when he knows what it feels like.

Whether they MUST be tazed (or pepper sprayed) depends on the agency you work for. I know that the logic for pepper spray is to show you that even if you are sprayed you CAN fight back....all is NOT lost.
After being sprayed...the instructors teach you to give verbal commands.....to fight back.......to draw your nightstick or PR-24 and to swing it.....and even to draw and point your weapon if need be.

The logic behind the Tazer is still a bit strange to me. some departments mandate that before you can carry and use a tazer, you must be shocked by one. Other agencys leave it up to the oficers to volunteer. I imagine that the object is to show you how it feels. I never understood that logic.......they never whacked guys with blackjacks, nightsticks or slappers years ago and the old cops still knew.....WOW...that's gotta hurt!....LOL!
Maybe being Tazed is just a confidence builder but I agree with you......I'll pass on being zapped by a Tazer. I have nothing to prove to anyone in the "macho BS" department.

So, if they're taser gun is taken and used against them, they'll now what to expect, removing the element of shock.

Unlike a gun, a taser gun is not (normally) deadly, so it can be used in training scenarios, as you previously mentioned.

It is done so that they know what the weapon feels like. Otherwise, they may use it too frequently. They are more likely to use their taser as opposed to their gun.

to teach the officer that in the event he is hit with the tazer, he can still function.. the officer already knows what it feels like, so it's not a surprising/debilitating stun..

My husband had to have it done when he was issued his tazer. His explanation was so that they know how it feels and maybe be less likely to be trigger happy I guess.

They do it to see what it feels like and I guess for some sort of macho thing.
