My wife had a thyroidectomy and takes synthroid, calcium, and another supplement. Now she has low iron. She's been checked and doen NOT have internal bleeding. She's taking proferrin, but the doctor says her iron is still low. She recommends doubling the proferrin. Is this the best course, or is there another cause for the low iron? She had a cancerous tumor removed from her leg 8 years ago, but all checkups since then have been clear. Any ideas?

The thyroid has nothing to do with iron issues. Instead, it is precisely what the other two respondents have said - our bodies absorb iron slowly and some conditions just develop.

Iron is not easily absorbed by the body. Certain foods like citrus and/or Vitamin C will help to maximize absorbing the iron from the medication. There are a lot of foods that are iron rich that will also help - grapes and raisins, broccoli, red meats are all a good source of iron and even though she is taking an iron supplement, these might also help. Be sure to read all of the patient information with the proferrin which may have additional information.

maybe she has become iron resistant such as my self. i take 200 mg of iron tabs 2 times a day. so i dont think she has anything to worry about but i think that she would be very happy to know that someone cares so much about her.
