Depends on your situation.
Cats can stay indoors forever, if you are good about cleaning litter boxes. They can be very affectionate. I had one on my lap a minute ago as I was typing. You can leave them for a weekend if you have to with no problems. They're clean, they're fun, they're great pets. But you might want to get 2 - they will entertain each other during the time you're gone.
Dogs are usually more affectionate, and they will look up to you like you were a god. They can be trained to do tricks and useful things. But they need more room, more exercise, and have to be let outside AT LEAST 2 times a day. A dog will eat more than a cat, so they'll be more expensive. They won't work as well if you live in an apartment or in a high rise.

It really depends on your situation and on your daily routine. If you live in an apartment and don't have a lot of free time, a cat is probably better for you, since they are smaller and don't have to be walked. If you live in a house with a yard and have a good deal of free time, a dog would be good since they can run around in the yard and you can walk them (of course, you can still get a cat if you live in a house if you want).
Also, what do you want out of your pet? If you want unconditional love, for it to follow you around, and teach it tricks, then get a dog. But if you want a pet that doesn't mind being alone for long periods of time and is low maintenance, get a cat.

It all depends on the personality and preference of the person. Dogs are very active, bark, jump and run and want to be with their person all the time. Cats are more independent, can be playful, like to sit on laps, but also sleep most of the time. I love most animals - when I don't I figure its the owners fault for not being responsible for their pet.

I am a dog person, and prefer them. I can tell when a dog is happy, his tail wags, and when he has to poo, he will tell me by barking. I have found in the past that while cats are definitely more independent, they are more standoffish and snobbish. Dogs may be dopier at times, and cats more sly, but I love a dog any day. The are both valuable and lovable creatures, but my mini American Eskimo and German Sheppard mix are my two babies.

I bet that just about every single person will say a dog.
I love dogs and have only owned a cat once or twice in my whole life.
I would say that it is easier to own a cat because you don't have to take them on walks, they don't eat as much, and they are not as hyper as dogs.
A dog is a lot more fun to play with though. depends on what kind you get.

Dogs. Cats do their own thing and don't like to be walked, played, held. Dogs love to be with their owner and they just deserve to be loved and taken care of!

It depends on living arrangements.
Dogs needs room to run & cats can be kept in the house all the time.
