In most states it's not anymore. It used to be to ensure that one or both partners weren't infected with some sort of STD.

The purpose of the blood test (not required in all states) is to check for STDs, particularly syphilis. I don't think it was ever used to check for blood relationships, I think that requires a DNA test which is much more expensive than the $10 or so you're charged for the blood test, plus the technology is fairly recent.

In most states a blood test is no longer needed. It used to serve the purpose of making sure both parties were healthy with no diseases and also to make sure they were not marrying family. It's a shame most states have done away with it because with all the STD'S out there we need it.

Mississippi requires the blood test. I am originally from Arizona, where it is no longer required. I actually asked the people who took our blood because I was also curious. Like most people I thought it was for aids, or to make sure that we were not related. They told me it was to make sure that neither of us had an STD.

There are only 4 states in the US that still require it.
It originated when syphillis came around and they didn't have a reliable treatment for it.
The site below will tell you whether or not you need a test, and if there is a waiting period.
Your best bet is always to call your town hall and check to see exactly what you need.

you don't have to take blood tests anymore...but they were just for disease purposes. i think there might be a few states that will still do it, but most of them don't.

in case you get a ordinary marriage license, you may get married everywhere you like in California. in spite of the undeniable fact that, in case you get a private marriage license, you may desire to get married in the county that issued it. You *do not* would desire to get married at a courthouse! stable luck!
