Since your question was in the Los Angeles section, I will give you a few ideas of fun things to do when visiting the LA area. This would be for a longer visit, so you could pick and choose if you have less time.
Redondo Beach is the perfect jumping off spot for a day trip to Catalina Island. This time of year the weather is great, the crowds are gone and you can really enjoy a relaxing day seeing the sights around Avalon.
If you are a kid at heart, you definitely need a trip to Disneyland and California Adventure. If you aren't really a fan of Disney, I would substitute Universal Studios or Knott's Berry Farm.
After that I would spend a day in Orange County. Visit the beach, have lunch at Duke's at the Huntington Beach Pier, go play at the Balboa Fun Zone, shop at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. If you have kids you could include a visit to the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana.
Next would be the cultural day with visits to any of our local museums: the Getty, the LA County Museum of Art, the La Brea Tar Pits/George C Page Museum, the Peterson Automotive Museum, the Norton Simon in Pasadena, etc. Depending on what your tastes are in art/culture/science there is a museum for you. If you do go to the Museum of Art or the La Brea Tar Pits, you could spend the rest of your day at the nearby Farmer's Market and the Grove for some great shopping and yummy food. Or go to the Beverly Center and see how many celebrities you run into.
If you've never been to a TV show taping try to see one while you're here. Most of them are free and you can even get signed up in advance for some of them. On Camera Audiences handles quite a few shows; the link is listed below.
If you have more time you could explore Big Bear or Palm Springs. San Diego is also nice for two or three days if you have the time.
Realistically you could spend a month in California and just scratch the surface of what there is to see and do.
Happy Travels!

Disneyland is a must! You can also visit Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park, the La Brea Tar Pits (home of the dinosaurs) downtown, the famous Huntington Library near San Gabriel, or Universal Studios in Burbank!

I was in LA last week... Let me just say this. I had a great time! Universal studios was awesome, since kids are back in school, there were no lines for the rides! Went to Hollywood which is dirty, kind of gross, seedy and you can witness drug deals right there in front of you, people will walk right up to you and ask you for change, etc... and people arguing. I was expecting it to be a lot nicer but it was kind of crappy. I was hoping to walk by the Chinese Theatre but it was blocked off and shut down! Sad...
Santa Monica, north of LA on Pacific Highway 1 is really cool! Lots of need things to see, a great Mexican restauarnt on the end of the pier... Theres rides and stuff there too. Take a drive for sure along Highway 1... it is really quite breataking. I also saw Ventura, which was nice and parts of Malibu as well. Have fun!

Well, Holllywood is kinda seedy but not dangerous. There are lots of people dressed in Goth. Santa Monica Blvd in Hollywood takes you past Beverly Hills (lots of wealthy subdivisions to check out here) and the UCLA campus on down to Santa Monica Beach. The boardwalk goes for miles on down past places like Venice Beach. It's a very nice part of Los Angeles. Also, Burbank has lots of movie studios, and Santa Barbara (north of LA) has lots of stars. It's nice just driving around the San Fernando valley. All of this is the north end of Los Angeles. It's the nicest part of the city and a wealthy area.

Well obviously Disneyland and Universal studios, but if the go to nbc.com, abc.com, and cbs.com you can get tickets to see live tv shows which are pretty fun. But I would suggest you take your rental car and visit Hollywood, Santa Monica, Malibu Beach. It's pretty neat to watch movies and being able to visualize that you were at the same places. Have fun and try to drive after 9am and before 3pm on the freeways.
