This person said that they had a very sick pet, and asked whether it was OK to kill it in their own backyard. Sounds terrible, doesn't it? However, let's assume that this person is quite destitute and simply DOES NOT have the funds to take the cat or dog to a vet. What should they do???

And no, it is not me. I do not have any pets, and I have plenty of funds if I did. But I was curious about what would happen in this situation.

I wonder why some think it's morally wrong for an owner to put their animal to death, but not the vet? If it's wrong to put an animal to death, why does one person have the right, but not another, as long as it is done "humanely"?

I live kinda out in the country-a quick, but loving end performed by the owner is by no means uncommon. There are several humane ways to kill an animal that is in distress.

I still think the local Vet would help. Or call the Humane Society or the local Animal Control. There is on excuse for such behavior. There should be a law against what that person was proposing to do. Would he like to be taken in the backyard and shot if HE was sick?

It's always very upsetting when people who don't have the financial ability to appropriately care for a pet take one on anyway. But I see what your quandry is - take the pet out back and kill it, or let it suffer?
It's definately not cheap to have your cat or dog euthanized at an emergency clinic - having worked at one for years, I've seen many people shocked by the bill for the simple injection. To remedy this problem, there are usually a number of low-cost or free clinics that are available, if someone's willing to make the effort to locate one. Veterinarian's try to make these clinics as accessible as possible, but some people just aren't willing to make the effort.
I suppose that if someone's a good shot and not willing to give their pet a peaceful death via euthanisia, it's better than allowing the animal to suffer and endure a painful passing. As a vet tech, I can tell you that I've said a prayer to the patron saint of animals - Saint Francis - asking him to watch over the pet and protect it's soul after it's died. It might sound really hokey - but it makes me feel better after a particularly sad loss.

There would be always some place to go...your local shelter, the vet, the animal control officers in your city. sometimes vets will do what they can and not charge you. I work for come vets that would give u the shirt off their back and others who will charge you everything and anything just to make money. but never should u kill ur own cat. that is cruelty to animals and is illegal almost everywhere.

No one who has a computer and an internet connection (and probably a cell phone and netflix etc.) is that destitute. Killing an animal in the backyard is morally wrong whether it is your pet or anyone else's.

Depends on how they will be killed, also..have they bothered to even call to see if they had to pay for the vet,,you would think to take every measure first before taking it your own hands..If you have a pet,I would think you have the money to raise them also.If you can't afford to feed your family,, it wouldn't be smart to get pets you can't afford..But this is just one opinion..My thoughts are don't kill them outside of your home, drop them off at the animal control even if money is an issue..

I don't think I could do it, but we really have to see the persons situation and if that person couldn't get any help at all, well I hope that it can live with the fact that she/he had to use its own hands to put him away.
*** I'm sure that that if he/she ask some naighborhood vet or the local animal shelter they will help.

I would never use a gun on a companion animal. It's better and not painful to let a vet euthanize them. My first cat was dying after fourteen years of being a sweet, gentle companion so I had him euthanized. It's not the easiest thing to do emotionally, but I know he's in a better place and at peace.

country boys are used to putting down animals. does'nt make it any easier but you do what you have to do. i once had a kitten caught in the fan belt of a car. Never would i haul it to a vet hurting the way it was. also most dogs hate the vets and i don't think it eases their minds any .

If I was completely broke and had no way of getting my pet to the vet. Yes, I would put it out of it's misery. I wouldn't like it but I would do it.
