Well first of all it isnt just some weird tradition, or shops not wanting to stay open on a Sunday because they think that no-one wants to shop. It's done because it's the law, and only a few places are allowed to for various reasons.
Yes it is linked with the Christian Church, as once upon a time the Church had a great influence on the law making within Britain. Count yourself lucky in a way, because there was a time when some shops weren't allowed to trade at all on a Sunday.
Not only this, but it is also perfectly legal for a person to refuse to work on a Sunday, without the threat of any come back (such as wage loss or the sack).
Hopefully this law shall one day be lifted and the 'idea' of a form of free will may be able to slowly creep it's way into our lives. Until then, we're just gonna have to sit it out, or petition to have it changed or something.

There are very few stores that close on Sundays because of the owners religion. One of them is/was Chick-fil-a. Most stores close because their families deserve some time to be together. They are open 6 days a week, usually until 9 or 10. Sunday, which usually only closes a few hours early gives them some rest and fun.
You can still buy the all the alcohol you need Saturday night if you are that desperate. I don't know what the reasons these were all started, but sad to tell you, you just can't blame this one on all the Christians.

If you want a shop to be open, someone has to be working at that time. Your convenience is an inconvenience to others. Personally, although I have no qualms about shopping on Sundays, I do feel sorry for the people who do not get to have a day off. They deserve a chance to spend time with their friends and families. OK, so they might get a day off in the week, but everyone else is at work then.

If stores thought they could make money on Sundays, they would stay open. Clearly, not enough people shop later on Sundays (for various reasons) to make it worth manning the store. I hardly think they would let religion get in the way of capitalism.
As for alcohol, that's a regional thing. Maybe they are worried that people will go to church, get all disappointed with life, knowing they will probably go to hell, and drown their sorrows in liquor. It could just be a safeguard.

The hours of store operations don't change in our town on Sundays. They remain the same. State law regulates the sale of alcohol: none sold/served after 2am or before 7am any day of the week, and none sold before noon on Sundays.
I sell alcohol. The only times I have ever refused to sell to someone was either (1) the person was DRUNK or (2) the person did not have their picture ID. Both are valid reasons to refuse the sale of alcohol, and have nothing to do with either their faith or mine.
There is nothing in the Bible that prohibits drinking alcohol. We are just admonished to not overindulge, because it leads to stupidity and ill health.

Where do you live that you can't buy alcohol on Sunday? How rich are you that you don't have to worry about working weekends? give us working stiffs SOME time off from waiting on self-centered rich jerks. The sabbath is for man, so he can rest, so his slaves can rest, as well as his beasts of burden. Do you deny the working class a chance to relax?
