Unfortunately, birds have just began to become popular as pets, and already we are faced with an overpopulation problem.
Just check your local news paper for a week or so in the pet section, or do a search for bird rescues and you'll see we already have bred birds to the point of having and "unwanted" population. Yet, breeders still breed.
If someone truly loved birds, and had their interest in mind, why would they continue to breed, like this shop you speak of?
I understand completely what you are implying about Pet Smart. I just do not agree that some shop that breeds more and more birds to hand over to people with little or know knowledge of what they are in for (and I do not me you. You seem to know what you are talking about) is any more responsible than Pet Smart.
Case and Point. Look at your Grey...

I read your previous question. Yeah, I'd be ticked. Birds are known to "hide" their illnesses, then all of sudden out of nowhere they're sick. So it's possible it was sick from the breeder it came from. I guess that's good they won't let you take it till it's better. They should have it quarantined away from the other birds and people though. They should've only made you put a deposit down too, not the full amount. I know you're attached to the bird, but I'd be real hesitant at this point. If you end up taking it, do not agree to see one of their vets, I think Petland does that. Take it to your own vet, that has no ties or affiliation with that store. And just for the record, the most I've ever seen a Grey go for is $900.00, and I paid only $425.00 for my Timneh Grey. Not really getting a good feeling about that pet store. Try calling your vet, and toss everything at him, problems/diseases, length of time they're keeping her, etc. see what the vet says and if it all sounds legit.
You know, they may be keeping it there saying it's sick while they're waiting for another "shipment" of them to come in. They've already got their money from you, if it's there on display, it's like advertising-people will be more likely to put a deposit down on one if they see one. Talk to a vet.

And because of that you are most likely getting a better bird due to a higher standard of breeding.
The cost of Greys varies from place to place as well as year to year based on availability. I've seen them for as much as 1800 dollars, so please don't feel bad,
Also, if you are in an area of the country where there aren't a lot of breeders, that will shoot the cost up as well.
Year to year, there are good years for breeding and some that aren't so good. I don't know why as I am not a breeder, but I have noticed that some years there are lots and lots of African Greys for sale which drives the price down, and other years, where they are difficult to locate, so naturally the price is higher.

You're getting a tad defensive. Could it be that you've realized you made a mistake? The bird needs avian vet care. I don't care WHAT these people do - they are not doing the right thing for this bird.
