I bought one of those Conair hot combs that can be used to curl or straighten hair. In the book it says to straight natural waves, pull hair taunt and go over until they go away. My hair, however, is too short to pull taunt while I pass the hot comb through it.

I tried it right away when I got it, had absolutely no effect. Im going to go take a shower and try it after that, but I have a few questions...

1) Do I let my hair dry completely before using it? Or does the heat work best while wet or damp?
2) Should I use the straightener AFTER I put hair gel in? I figure once I straighten it, I cant glob hair gel in and mess it up or itll go wavy again, so I donno what to do about that.
3) Do you think this will work? Lol.. be honest. Im having my doubts already.

Thanks all

I use a hair straightener all the time...you do have to have at least 3" of hair to use it properly according to my directions.

But to answer your questions:

1) The best thing to do is to always start with a nice clean head of hair. Towel dry as much as possible. Then wait about 10 minutes after that to start the process. The heat will get the rest of the moisture out of your hair...so do not worry about it being a little damp.

2) NEVER use your straightener with hair gel...you WILL mess it up totally (just ask a hair dresser!!) There is a spray that you can use on your hair so it does not damage your hair. I have never used it personally, but I hear it will help with people that have more stubborn curly hair and make it straight for a little while longer.

3) It should work as long as your hair is at least 3" in length. I would not recommend pulling it taut...just use the thing like a brush, but go very slowly so that the hair will dry as you pull it along.

Good luck with this...if at first you do not succeed...go to a hair stylist...LOL!!

I'm afraid the Conair device you bought will be useless to you. Return it for a refund and buy a cermic flat iron instead. They work much, much better.

If you can afford a CHI flat iron, buy it. It's the best on the market and you will be very happy with the results. They come in a couple of different plate sizes and again, if you can afford buy both. The one with the larger plates is good for larger sections of hair. The smaller CHI is great for getting close to the scalp. Be careful, even the CHI can burn your scalp if you get too close.

You say your hair is straight on the bottom and wavy at the top. You may be able to get away with only using the smaller CHI, so try that first.

Apply gel, mousse or whatever styling product you use and either blow dry or let it dry naturally. Once completley dry, use the flat iron. You always want to start from the bottom.and work your way up. Do that by working in sections.

Finally, remember that heat, any heat, is damaging to your hair so you'll definately want to use something to protect your before you begin straightening it. Go to your local beauty supply store and ask them to point out a couple of products for you. There are many, in many price ranges and they all pretty much the same.

One more thing - you'll need patience for this. The first few times can be daunting but once you get the hang of it, you'll be a pro at it and it won't take so long. Patience! :)

Good luck!

in case your hair is pin straight away there is not any way that you receives your hair wavy/curly like in those images without using some style of things!! For quite a lot less wave then contained in the images you should attempt - Brading your hair even as moist and then taking it out even as its dry - putting your moist hair up in a bun and then taking it out even as its dry - Scrunching your hair with a some style of product - Rollers

dont use gel, use a heat protector product so you dont scorch your hair. put the heat protector in your hair when its wet, blowdry to get the water out, then use the comb.
