Savior, the son of God the Father, the anointed one, a sinless idol... so much more depending on the individual believer. For the original meaning and where it originates from though would be, the English form of the Greek word Χριστός (Christós), which means literally The Anointed One. The word was originally used to translate the Hebrew word מָשִׁיחַ (Mašíaḥ), that is Messiah.
The word is often misunderstood as the surname of Jesus due to the numerous mentions of Jesus Christ in the Christian Bible. The word is in fact a title, hence its common reciprocal use Christ Jesus, meaning The Anointed One, Jesus. Followers of Jesus became known as Christians because they believed that Jesus was the Christ, or Messiah, prophesied about in the Tanakh (the Christian Old Testament). < this was obviously found on Wikipedia, since your were wanting exact information.
It's a title, some Christians include it as his name, but that's not even the point. It's like asking why do you work under a "manager." to you that sounds like a stupid question probably.

A number of people had bits and pieces of the right answer. Let me put it all together for you.
'Christ' is the anglicized version of the Greek word 'krisyos', which means the same as the Hebrew 'masiah' (Messiah). All these mean 'the Anointed One'. And that refers back to the way God made his chosen one known -- they were anointed with holy oil, like Aaron the Priest.

What does that even matter? Jesus, the Son of the Living God, God made flesh, the Savior of mankind, is who he is. Christ is another designation for him. If it's first usuage was new testament, and comes from a greek origin (or any other for that matter), it changes absolutely nothing as to his Lordship.
If you're asking as a Christian and are just curious....that's fine, but I dont' have an answer. If you're angling at something, you have nothing to stand on, as I've just demonstrated.

As other people have noted, the word "Christ" derives from a Greek word that means the same as the Hebrew word "messiah".
An "anointed one" was someone who was picked by God to do something. King David was a messiah, since the Prophet Samuel anointed him with olive oil to show that he was to be the next king of Israel, for example.
Jesus is called "Christ" because he has been picked by God to be the king of the Jews.
.....................................................
The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ).
~John 1:41 (NIV)
The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."
~John 4:25 (NIV)

the teachings of Christianity, that are of Scripture are bitter/sweet. To Christians, the teachings mean love, forgiveness, righteousness, fellowship, redemption via Christ, and a global which will sometime be lower back to paradise. All evils will be weeded out. All mysteries will be solved. there is which ability, to the Christian ideas, to existence and that is objective. the different fringe of sword of salvation is destruction. Destruction in case you gained't settle for the redemptive value God gave us for forgiveness of the flaws we've executed in evil. the different side says that liars, fornicators, thieves, blasphemers, murderers, perverts, whores, and all way of assailants of the truths of God will perish. We trust in a perfect truth- that each and every one human beings should be conformed to a righteous spirit of justice. we do not trust that truth is relative to the theory of the fellow. We trust that some issues are of darkness and evil and continuously will be. yet we even trust that we've all fallen short of the respect and glory of God and His will for us- that any one is able to teach their existence round and be completely forgiven. We evaluate such issues as holiness and non secular innocence to be virtues of goodness. We associate godlessness with the evils of society and the boom of darkish forces. In end, maximum Christians understand that we've not lived-as a lot because the mercy and charm afforded us, yet we proceed to press ahead, searching ahead to the day even as anybody and this global of darkish deeds is changed to a paradise of sunshine and love.

It means "The Annointed One" or "The Chosen One". It means the same as Messiah which is Greek. So to say "Jesus Messiah" is the same as saying "Jesus Christ."
