that would be a difference in terminology.

That's just ******** fed to people in grade school to make them feel better about themselves for getting picked on. Putting down others happens for a variety of reasons, but very rarely is it because of some deep-seated insecurity. For example-you probably put people down when they cut you off in traffic, ask you a stupid question, say or do something that is totally ignorant or that shows their ignorance.
As far as unprovoked insults go, that's just how some people communicate. I would say, though, that a person who puts people down alot for no reason is probably more likely to be less intelligent then those around them.

Well, if they feel the NEED to put them down, if they feel they HAVE to put down everyone, then you could easily assert that insecurity is a large factor. These sort of people need to be constantly reminded in exactly what ways they feel they are superior to the people around them in order to remain comfortable with who they are.

Sometimes, it's just playground bs. Sooner or later, we hope, these people will grow up.
But, a lot of thee time, I think it is insecurity. People who feel inferior to others try to puff themselves up by making someone else look bad. There is very little hope for people like that, the best thing to do is to ignore them. Any encouragement will only make them lash out harder, and hurt themselves worse.

Definately- it makes them feel superior, you know, they make a remark about someone, everyone laughs or even joins in, they feel like they have friends and even feel superior to that person that they just put down. But inside, after that moment, once again they are dealing with their own insecurity.

I think that's a big part of it....makes them feel better for some reason about themselves to make others look bad. Some do it just because they are mean spirited...poor upbringing. There is to much hatred in our world today but on the upside alot of good hearted people to...thank goodness.

When they feel the need? Not putting you down...but putting people down is a habit...stay away from them...just like you wouldn't hang around someone belching all the time.

Not always. Some people are mean and put down others because they enjoy it.

As a matter of fact yes it is. They tear down others to build themselves up and to feel better about themselves.
