You can book a jungle cabana, located in the North shore by Hanalei. It's basically a nicely furnished shack for a modest price of about $1000 for a week. What I love about the place is its tranquility and lush private garden full of banana and mango trees. There's one queen sized, good quality bed. There's even a rushing stream by the kitchen and an outdoor claw foot bathtub and an outdoor hot/cold shower. You can go around naked 24/7 without being seen by anyone there.

At night, it's so dark that you can really found out what "Milky Way" really is. Also, there are some chickens that run around at every meal time looking for scraps.

The place has no TV reception, but you can watch videos and listen to a selection of Hawaiian music CDs, and a little library inside the shack. There is also a kitchenette and dining area with microwave, fridge, a four-burner oven, pots, plates, spices, everything you might need. The unseen caretakers are very considerate (and you will find out why if you stay there) and made us welcome and truly feel cared for at all times.

These are the things that you will never experience at a hotel, anywhere. I will not reveal the website here because I want to keep it a secret, but if you email me at jeanettewinterson@yahoo.com, I will tell you.

Besides snorkling and hiking (free), you can start the visit
with a helicopter ride ($220 per person) at the southern part of the island to give you a general feel of the geography of the island.

This is the company I went with because they have one of the safest records around Kauai, as well as the fact that their copters do not have doors. However, I don't recommend a heli ride if you're going in the winter because the weather is very unpredictable and the flight conditions are hazardous.

Interisland Helicopters - 800)656-5009

$427.48 for two people 24 Hour Cancellation Policy

You can also go on a ATV tour and your mother can ride the Rhino which doesn't require her to drive the atv.
The one I went with was Kipu Ranch ATV because they go through privately held ranch land with exclusive views and they do not have speed monitors on their ATVs like other places. Plus, the guide was extremely knowledgeable and he taught me a good deal of Kauai flora and folklore.

Kipu Ranch Adventures - 808-246-9288

$109.00 per person

There's a half day kayak-hike-swim-zipline excursion with lunch and drinks for $150 per person. The physical exertion level is moderate and you and your mom should be in a good condition to participate. There are other tours that allow you to choose between mix-and match activities.

There are so many other truly magical places not frequented by tourists, like the very end of the road on the western side of Kauai. And you can also take a ride on the Kokee mountain to the very top, which is so unearthly and different from the lush wet greenery at sea-level that you'd need a light jacket to keep warm.

Ahh..remembering the good times I had in Kauai makes me smile. I hope you have a great time there!

I used to live there about 3 or 4 years ago. The east side has many restaurants and hotels are less expensive. Poipu is the sunny side of the island, Princevile is the rainy side. The west there is Kokee and Waimea Valley, camping and cabins. I lived in Lawai, near Poipu.

Take the bike ride down from Kokee to the valley floor, there are tours or you can rent some mountain bikes and do your own ride.

If you like hiking Kokee and Waimea have lots of trails, there's one canyon trail that takes you to a waterfall in Waimea. Near Kee beach is the start of the Kalalau trail, you can go about a mile to the next beach and then another mile inland to see the waterfall. Don't stand underneath it, there may be debris or rocks falling on you.

In Hanalei you can rent kayaks to paddle up the river, there's a spot along the way for a picnic.

If you are a really strong rider you can ride the power line trail that ends up in Wailua on the east side. It can be muddy and if you see any big puddles go around, sometimes they are very deep.

Definitely take the Napali coast tour either the helicopter or the ocean tour. They are both worth it, bring plenty of film or extra memory sticks you'll need them.

Kayak up the Wailua river, there's a trail, sometimes the water is waist high, but at the end is a waterfall and pool. Also close by is the Nounou trail also called the Sleeping Giant. The trail going up the chin is a little steep. Be careful you stay on the trail on the way up, there are pig trails that veer off the main trail, they are very narrow and it's a long way down.

In Poipu I like to go to Mehaulepu beach, I take my mountain bike. there's a place to rent horses as well if you don't feel like walking or riding. Keep going on the trail and you eventually get to a tunnel which is a short cut to the east side of the island.

The sugar refinery used it, you'll pass by what remains of the sugar mill. You won't believe how dangerous working conditions were. Some of the old workers tell me horror stories of people getting killed or parts of their hands cutoff by the machinery. When the grinding wheels get stuck, a person has to go in there to unstick it.

Don't go through the tunnel on your bike unless you have flashlights, it's dark and you might catch your wheel on one of the rails.

i'd advise Kauai. Very romantic and eco-friendly. it really is a attractive island and isn't any longer as touristy as the different islands it somewhat is why it really is so captivating The seashores are impressive and there are various activities consisting of horseback driving, helicopter rides and boat excursions plus many extra. I only were given again from per week in Kauai and that i did not run out of issues to do. i'd advise the North Shore because it somewhat is extra couple oriented at the same time as the South Shore is extra relatives oriented. both way Kauai is a attractive island. Have an impressive honeymoon anyplace you flow!

Yes, I have been their. It's real laid back island, not much to do. Go to the parks, malls, surf shops, drive around. Just do a google search for tourist at Kaui for all the things going on during the time you will be their.
