Your body's prefered form of calorie is the carbohydrate. That means it will burn off calories that come from carbs before it burns off calories that come from protein or fat. Athletes need a lot of calories, preferably in the form of carbohydrates to keep them going. The 2000 calorie diet that nutrition labels are based off of are just an average. Some athletes my need something closer to 5000 calories. The more active you are, the more you need to eat.

They burn it off exercising. Athletes need a lot of fuel and carbs and calories are fuel.
