As you know, Jesus died on the day before Passover. For Jesus to fully fulfill the Scriptures He must be sacrificed on Passover. He was. Jesus descends into hell on Passover day and becomes like the ram in the burnt offering. Passover last for 12 hours. I believe this is the time Jesus suffers in hell. At dawn on Passover, Jesus strips the devil of his authority over mankind. He enters the deepest part of hell called the dungeon and declares His victory over Satan.

…He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison (1 Pet 3:18-19)

Jesus was made alive in His soul right in hell itself. He then preached victory to the spirits in prison. He also led all the Old Testament saints out of Abraham’s bosom.

This is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men." (Eph 4:8)

Jesus message is clear:

I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. (Rev 1:18)

Jesus defeated the devil in Hades (hell) and took the keys from him. He now rules!

1 Peter 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

1 Peter 4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

But how could Jesus preach to all of the spirits in 3 days? when His ministry on earth was almost 3 years and there were but few who hearkened unto his voice.

D&C 138:27 But his ministry among those who were dead was limited to the brief time intervening between the crucifixion and his resurrection;

how was it possible to preach to them in so short a time? He went not in person among the wicked and disobedient.

D&C 138:30 But behold, from among the righteous, he organized his forces and appointed messengers, clothed with power and authority, and commisioned them to go forth and carry the light of the gospel to them that were in darkness, even to all the spirits of men; and thus was the gospel preached to the dead.

basically that is what He was doing...organizing the righteous dead to preach to the wicked dead...for more specific details it is

The bible says that Jesus descended into the farthest part of the earth. This means that He went to the place where the Old Testament faithful had been kept, awaiting heaven. In the bible, there is a parable about a poor man who died, he was being comforted in "Abraham's Bosom". When Jesus ascended, He led the captives "in His train", He led out of Abraham's bosom the OT faithful that had been there, waiting for their Messiah.

Nothing! He was dead! Dead does not mean alive somewhere else. the Bible declares clearly that the dead do and know nothing.

Ecclesiastes 9:5-6, 10 -- "For the living know that they will die; But the dead know nothing, And they have no more reward, For the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished;... Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going."

HE went into Hell and Triumphed over the Devils, then HE went into Paradise and Preached the Word (you gotta hear the Word to get Born-Again,Spiritman Recreated) to the Old Testament Saints who weren't Born-Again yet. After they got their Spirits Recreated, Jesus took the whole shebang up to Planet Heaven.
