A dental license is only granted after passing a total of 6 or 7 days of examinations, including written and clinical testing. It indicates that the license holder is qualified to treat you as a patient.

The license is granted by a regulatory agency that is (ultimately) part of the state's Attorney General's office. It gives the consumer the protection of knowing that someone can have the right to practice dentistry revoked if they should be found to be incompetent.

a license means that a professional has been evaluated and is qualified to practice in their field. it means that there is some governing agency that will regulate their activities. this means that if your dentist acts outside of the expected standards, you have someone to go to for disciplinary action against him or her. since they can not work as a dentist without a valid license, they are more motivated to uphold a certain standard of care.
