Because, like many people, parents sometimes forget to think before they speak. What they really mean, usually, is that the behavior was unwise or has harmful consquences. They may not really think you are stupid, but may believe you have done something they see as being immature, unhealthy, disrespectful, etc., and in the heat of the moment, they made it into a personal attack instead of addressing the behavior.

There's two ways a parent can tell their kids they are doing something stupid...the right way and the wrong way!

The wrong way is just to tell the kid that he/she is stupid, and give no further information or explanation.

The right way would be to tell the kid a story from personal experience, and explain how the parent had learned the hard way that what they had done was not the brightest of ideas they ever had.. Obviously, this particular scenario works more for something the kid has not done yet.

However, it is possible to discuss what stupid thing a kid has done without calling them stupid. All the parent has to do is ask, "What have you learned from this experience?" It may sound silly, but it's a great opener and if the parent waits it makes the kid think about what they've done.

Burnt a hole in the counter once. Didn't give my parents a chance to say I was stupid. I cried to my grandmother, "I'm stupid, I'm stupid". When my parents came home and found me crying in grandma's arms and heard what I did, they said, stop crying....you're not stupid. Guess I punished myself with my own words more than they could ever have. Crazy li'l kid I was.

Parents are angry when they say that sometimes and really means no harm. Parents only wants you to do better in what they are calling you stupid for.

My parents always told me i was stupid, but looking back i was making some pretty stupid mistakes. They are really not saying you are stupid they are trying to tell you the things you are doing are stupid, so what ever you are doing to make them say you are stupid , stop them, or at least hide it better from them.

As a parent with two children I can tell you I say it because I know they know better then to do or say what they have said or done. I always say I am sorry after saying it but still I ask myself why?

I dont think that they mean you are stupid literally. I guess it is based on some of the things that we do that makes them call us stupid.

My parents never said I was stupid. They might have told me "what I did was stupid" but they never called me stupid.

That is the absolute worst thing to say to a child.

Even if you were making mistakes, doing silly things or disappointing them in some way, it is not a good enough reason to belittle you.

The only worse thing I could think of is if they called you that in front of your friends.

Have a talk to them both and make them aware of how awful it makes you feel. Maybe they do it carelessly without thinking first.
