Every species is a little different, but usually until their young'uns digestion is developed enough to digest the adult diet of the species. For humans, that would be one year of age, but many choose to nurse their children somewhat longer.

Enough for the newborns to grow and develop sufficiently to eat solid food. If they don't get enough from the mother or a surrogate female, they die.
Some women are known to breastfeed their children as a treat right into adolescence. However, the bond to their mother may become a little confused as they reach sexual awareness. Hence some very kinky stories.
