I used to have a boyfriend. He had asked me to a dance and I had said yes. No we broke up because I like another guy and he thinks we are still going. I don't want to hurt him but I had already told him that we would jsut be going as friends and he said he was fine with that but now he thinks we are going as more. I will be dancing with other guys there. How do I tell him that we are not going together in a nice way? Thanks.

Well the nice way would be to find a suitable replacement. You agreed to go with him. He's on the line socially and probably financially. If you back out you really ought to pay for half of the date and if you go with him you REALLY ought to spend the dance with him. Anything less is being really pretty horrible to him. You made your bed, lay in it for a night.

You should never have told him you would be going with him as friends. It usually takes a little while to get over a relationship before you can be friends. You should have, right away told him you weren't going with him at all. If you care about him enough, that you don't want to hurt his feelings, go with him and be his date. It wouldn't be all bad to spend a night with someone that you used to like.

Tell him that he is a great friend and you promise to say hi to him when you see him at the dance.

(I'm implying here, don't GO with him to the dance. He will take that as you "meaning" that you still like him.)

Just have an honest, straightforward talk, as long as you believe honestly that you haven't done any wrong.
