any ultra-partisan-loyalists are, actually, but they're the most visible at the moment.

I think you have a point when talking about the "dark side" of conservativism. I see a lot of clowns on tv who claim to be conservatives but are just angry at everyone for whatever reason and feel a need to denigrate and vilify any particular group whether they are from another country or are from thier own country but don't share the same political leanings.

If you look the word conservativism up in a dictionary you'll likely find a definition similiar to this, "a political or theological orientation advocating the preservation of the best in society and opposing radical changes."

I consider myself conservative on some issues and more moderate on others. For example, I don't agree with wellfare as a lifestyle. I think if people need a hand up they should be given what they need for a short period and then they should be guided towards training so they can get a job and work hard like the rest of us. I don't believe in handouts. So, I consider myself a fiscal conservative in the truest sense of the term.

But, guess what? I don't believe in wellfare as a corporate lifestyle either. Years ago I almost puked when I heard Lee Iacoca was begging the government to bail out Chrysler. Here's a conservative guy trying to save a conservative company by asking for a bloody hand out from the government!!! Wow!!! Don't conservatives believe in letting the market decide which company should survive and which should die??? I wish I could have been one of the political officals who Iacoca addressed. I would have asked him if he considered making a better product as the answer to Chrysler's woes.

I think most reasonable people are like that; conservative on some issues and moderate on others. I've always considered partisan politics as an arena for the mentally deficient. These people can't think for themselves so they need their party leaders to do the thinking for them. They're just like pitbulls straining themselves on the end of a leash just waiting for their masters to issue the attack command without having to think for themselves. Pathetic.

So, ya there are those who brand themselves as conservative but they are just haters looking for someone to hate. Not thinkers who want to live peacefully with others and who are willing to accept different views, lifestyles, religions etc; But, don't paint all "conservatives" with the same brush. If you do that you are just the same as those goof balls.

Not really, but it seems to have taken on a dimension in this era that the old conservatives would laugh at ... or fear.

"There is not in all America a more dangerous trait than the deification of mere smartness unaccompanied by any sense of moral responsibility." Teddy Roosevelt, Abilene, KS, May 2, 1903

Wow what an intelligent and thoughtful comment. I learned to see the world in a whole new way. I never thought of quite that way before.

Your insights and master of teaching are being wasted in your 8th gade homeroom. You shoud drop out and start writing political speeches for the Democrat Party. Your eloquence is truly a gift.

Please have a thought before "asking" a question.
