They vary mostly in the additional herbal ingredents.
However, the ACTIVE ingredents are what actually do the real work.
The herabal ingredents are put in for show, tradition, formulations made before medical sciene, or unknown reasons. These herbal ingredents aren't tested and the combination is risky at best. Which is why avoid using most of them.
Most colon cleansers use activated charcoal.
This site may tell you more: http://healingtools.tripod.com/thn5.html
"Studies show that Activated Charcoal is harmless when ingested or inhaled, or when it comes in contact with the skin. In rare cases, charcoal may mildly irritate the bowel in sensitive persons, but no allergies or side effects have been recorded. Ingested Charcoal may linger in the colon, but this is not harmful. Many pediatricians and pediatric handbooks recommend that Activated Charcoal be kept on hand as an antidote in the family medicine chest, especially in households that include small children (5, 10, 38, 41, 53, 64)."

"Charcoal has also been used to treat other intestinal disorders such as diarrhea, constipation, and cramps. There are few studies to support these uses and there are also concerns that frequent use of charcoal may decrease absorption of essential nutrients, especially in children."
Activated charcoal is safe to use. In fact it is so safe that when a hospital pumps your stomach they use activated charchol to help collect the stomach contents.
So those with activated charcoal are safe once every 6 months or less, but I can't say anything as to the herbal contents. You will have to research them yourself.
