You don't say where you are located - but in New York state, the law requires them to be at least 50 feet from the entrance.
The Health Department is responsible for enforcement, and your employer can be fined.
I have the same problem with the 'smoke hags' at my work. Not only do they smoke in front of the door - and I am forced to walk through the cloud - but they take several breaks a day in order to feed their addiction. It is classic time theft, but since the boss also smokes, he doesn't enforce the rules. Unfortunately, the rest of us non-smokers get stuck picking up the slack.

in the state of Massachusetts, when smoking became illegal in restaurants, I know that it was 10 feet from the building, but I don't know if that's still the case, it's certainly not being enforced anyway! There should be more laws against smoking in public, or anywhere for that matter. good question.

Depends on where you work but most places require you to smoke in the parkinglot next to the building. or behind. not right infront. i know i work at a gas station there suppose to smoke bye the back door or side of building where empolyees park or in there car.
hope this helps if it bothers you and other customers call or e-mail your corperate headquarters your area supervisor.
