Most scholarships out there require an application of some sort filled out by yourself or your parents as in the case of Federal Financial Aid.

With the FAFSA.ed.gov form, it is filed during your senior year and will enable you to receive need based college help from the federal government and your college.

Your high school guidance office has a list of scholarships given out by local organizations and company. Many are for graduates from your specific high school, elementary school, middle school, or even the town you grew up in.

The other source is from private organizations and companies. Also many college financial aid websites list private sources too.
It requires filing out an application and many times completing an essay or have an interview with them. There are free membership scholarship listing websites on the web.

I recommend going through scholarhsip sources and get a feel for what is out there. It may or may not be early to apply for some scholarships out there. However, it will give you an idea for what you will be going through in your senior year.

It is important to pay attention to the website and about the organization offering the scholarship because it is based on an essay or an interview. The impression you give from either of the source can determine whether or not you get the scholarship or not, so in this case it pays to do your homework on researching the organization.

Good luck!

Some organizations award them (Merit Scholars) and most colleges give them. They can be for athletics, academics, or both.
Go on the website and find out what academic, sport, and community qualifications the school or organization is looking for, and try to exceed them.
Volunteer work counts a lot.
Any questions, send an email to the school or group, and make sure to apply in time. You may need character references as well.
Any library has books on this, see the reference librarian.
There are also Pell Grants, that do not need to be paid back, and a federal application for financial assistance.
Get a mentor.
