I suppose there are some people who can't tell the difference between flattery and love - but to me they are as immediately distinguishable as a donkey and a ping pong paddle. But truth can be delivered in a cruel way, and some truths are cruel no matter how they are delivered. Also, some truths are fabulous, like someone sincerely telling you they love you and you can see it is true. Just because a thing is true doesn't make it kind or unkind. But it should prevail just the same.

My attitude has always been this. If I love or care for someone, then I should tell them the truth, even if it means they will hate me and never speak to me again. I am to be honest and to try to help others. How they receive it or view it or view me really isnt something that I should consider. For as long as I have been honest, I have done what I am suppose to do.
Anyone can treat you nicely and be complimentary toward you, for any number of reasons. Only someone who truely cares about your welfare will be willing to tell you the whole truth about yourself or themselves or a situation, even when they know it may cause you to sever ties with them. That is caring more about someone else and their well being then it is your own selfish wants and desires. It is also what we are to do toward others.

Truth has always been a very unpopular commodity. We live in a society that values feelings over truth. It is a society that preaches that children should never fail a class because it is bad for their self-esteem. It is a society where facts about Race are taboo to talk about because it wouldn't be nice!
It has been said that the truth shall make you free, and there are a multitude of enslaved people in this world.

I don't trust flattery because there may be an ulterior motive. Truth, I can handle. Even if I don't like the truth, and if it is the truth, of course, I can repect the person giving it.

Some of the cruelest truth I ever received came from some one I loved. No one I ever loved had been that courageous.
I married him.
