I do not think it is "xenophobia" to fear illegal behavior and criminals - I would call it "practical". We do not fear ALL foreigners (xenophobia), just the criminals and illegal ones that seek to abuse and exploit our system of justice and back pockets in order to "better their way of life".
What would you say if you knew that a little over 15% of the illegal immigrants through the Mexican border are from South America... countries like Colombia, Panama, Nicaragua and El Salvador where guerrillas are common and often running from the law of their own governments? Is this what you are willing to allow in? Will your mind change too late when your children, or you neighbor's children are taken and sold into slavery overseas? By the way this is one of the fastest growing industries in the world - don't deny it.
Not all illegal immigrants are bad, but some are. And it's enough to worry about. You side with them and say it is an acceptable level of abuse, but you also cry when they let out rapists from jail because of overcrowding, or you complain that the death penalty is wrong because even one mistake is too much. OK- be consistent- which is it? Is one too many or not?
I travel often to these countries and know these cultures well... this does not mean I feel for them when so many legitimate people are trying to come here and waiting in line for a year or more.

So many questions so many answers, here is my worthless opinion, my wife is Mexican I'm American i only want her to be able to live here life with me, she is not after any-ones job, and she nor i would ever bring any of her family to live in the states, because that is not what immigration should be for, nor should it be for people to just come and earn money, this is the problem as i see it with immigration, the amount of people coming here would be small, if it where only the married people that where allowed in, change that part of immigration and the problem will stop. it is unnatural to keep a man and his wife apart, and is even more evil to keep the apart for years just so laborers can make a little money and use up the yearly immigration quotas,I've been married 5 years and still my wife has to live in Mexico city and i in the USA, big money is pulling strings to keep the numbers of cheap labors high while hurting the whole immigration system for the ones who should really be getting the benefit of it, the corruption of high level politics are to blame, you and i should not be angry at each other friends this will resolve nothing, repair our system and solve the problem, make it fair.

I think they scream racism on the top of there lungs because Nationalism just doesn't sound as awful. I am a Nationalist and I feel it is utmost important to keep our sovereignty and preserve our American Culture. I not saying no immigration, just limiting it and distributing it evenly between all the people in all the nations. Why should everyone that wants to come over from South American get to jump the fence when people from Africa have to wait? Pick a number of immigrants to permit and spread it out EVENLY among the people in all the countries in the world . Stick to that number. It is not a right to come to the United States of America. It is a privilege.

You are EXACTLY right. They don't have any good arguments at all.
If you leave your house unlocked 24/7/365 don;t you expect to get robbed at some point. If you come home and 15 people have moved in and our eating everything out of your fridge, don't you have a right to complain?
Now get me right, I am a very liberal African-American woman, but I am smart enough to see that if we just give everything away for free to illegals (and they are illegal and therfor they ARE criminals) then this country won't last much longer and there is so much we can continue to do to help the world.
Remember 5% of the worlds people are responsible for almost 50% of the worlds food, 50% of the worlds potatable water, and 50% of the worlds safety.

I think that illegal immigration is VERY complex. It's not as black and white as most people believe it is. There are a lot of factors to think about. Like:
1. the impact it would have on the economy.
2. the fact that our country doesn't have an effective system for allowing people who want to come here, to come here legally...if it was simpler, more people would do it.
3. The inherent problem that Mexico does nothing to stop it's people from coming here...because it's better for Mexico if it's citizens cross illegally, and send billions of U.S. dollars back home.
Ultimately, the people are hard working and want to make a better life for themselves. They are uneducated, and are not told by their government or ours that what they are doing is wrong. They aren't criminals (well not most of them). But it IS unfair that they can work and live here without going through the same red tape as others who came here and are legal...

Right on and Same here. (I asked sort of the same question)
Every question I ask gets slammed with racial name calling and people saying I came from illegal immigrants. Then they use the native american thing. So then I stated that most of our ancestors came well after this was an established country, and still got the same ignorant answers.
I guess they choose to be ignorant and uninformed. The reason I am asking questions is that I want to be informed and people's opinions. Never gonna happen though.

First of all, I have to agree that illegal immigrants are a problem. My views on the matter are that we should let those who are already in the country and are willing to admit it pay fines and eventually become citizens, and at the same time make it much harder to illegally come into the country. Those who do make it in should be subject to much harsher penalties.
Also, in response to what someone said about if you like illegals so much, who don't you invite them into your home: I have, and they are people just like everyone else. My aquaintance behaved very well, and did not try to break or steal anything, as many stereotypes would have you believe.
