The ending days of WWII ended up being a land grab between the allies (England, France, US) and the Soviet Union (which was also an "ally" in the war. They were grabbing up the lands of the defeated axis (Mainly Japan and Germany). The lands liberated by allied forces became democratic and free. The lands "liberated" by the Soviet Union became Communistic and sattelite states of the Soviet Union.
The cold war was a conflict between the free states and the communist ones, led by the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union tried to continue to gain influence and expand (the land grab). America and the free states, had a policy of containment to keep the Soviets from growing. This led to a number of conflicts, like the Korean War.
In the last days of WWII, the allies could only liberate as far the the 33rd parallel (33 degrees north latitude) of the korean peninsula. The Soviets liberated all lands north of the parallel. Thus created a divided korea. north being communist, the south being free. the Korean war was an invasion of the south by the north to reunify korea under the banner of communism. the UN launched a force, led by the United States, to repel the invasion and maintain the armistice lines of the 33rd parallel.
Vietnam was similiar, a communist north was trying (and succeeded) to reunify the south under the banner of Communism.
But the cold war had little to do with open conflict, korea and vietnam were proxy wars. wars fought through second parties.
Most of the time, the war was posturing, influencing and intimidating each other through the use of nuclear weapons.
In the End, the US was able to outspend the Soviets in an arms race. and the Soviets went broke first. The US won. (this was helped by plans of the space shuttle to the soviets, they went broke trying to reverse engineer and build one, which never flew)

The Cold War was the tension that existed between NATO and the Soviet Union. It was a time of nuclear proliferation and paranoia. It started shortly after WW2 and ended essentially when the Soviet Union disbanded.

It was a long "war" in which a shot was never fired. It was a spending war and an arms race between the US and the USSR. The eventual outcome was the fall of the Soviet Union.
