I would like to go to therapy. I've been to a social worker before. I'm wondering if it would be better to go to a psychologist? Are they better trained in counseling? Or would they be too clinical? There is a chance that I have a chemical problem aside from just thinking in negative ways. I know you need a psychiatrist to get medicine. I've been to them before also, but legal drug dealing seems to be all they're good for. They don't want to talk to you. I've asked if there are tests to check what kind of imbalance you may have and they say there aren't any. They just throw different pills at you hoping one works which is time consuming and frustrating.

So I'm looking to talk to someone. I want to do that for sure. I've also been considering Wellbutrin. I've tried Zoloft (couldn't do the side effects), Effexor (made me too speedy feeling so I stopped), and Paxil which had no side effects really but didn't make much difference either.

Any ideas?

I work in a Psych center, I find that for mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, seeing a psychologist that you can trust is better. For social issues like family dynamics, money concerns or social issues a social worker is better. Don't be afraid to go through several psychologists until you find one that you click with, a trusting relationship will help more than trying to be nice.

Actually I have had some of the same experiences (tho not a social worker) I have a therapist that I see when needed and my GP is the one who is treating me for the medical part of my depression. We tried several combinations before hitting the right one. For some reason my GP was much more willing to try meds than a psychologist was. I am taking Wellbutrin in combination with Paxil. Separate they do nothing for me but together they are magic! We did try Effexor but it had the opposite reaction with me...I felt like I had the flu..was dizzy and my equilibrium was so off I had a very hard time just walking. Good luck and hope that helps!

try to find a counseling center that has a counselor you can work with and a doctor that can prescribe the meds. have you tried prozac? it has virtually no side effects but does wonders. good luck to you!

they are people...
so it depends on who it is...
i have been to many, some have PHD's and are total as$ holes. some have just an MFT license and are great...
you just have to take your chances because the degree won't tell you how they can relate to you as a person.
