We stayed at the Aladdin Hotel, a few blocks from Times Square. There are private rooms (very tiny, we had bunkbeds) and shared bathrooms. We were only a couple of blocks from Times Square and within easy walking distance to Central Park & Rockafellar Plaza.

I think we paid about $70-80 for the private room, but I think they also have a hostel for about $30-40/night.

Have fun!

I stayed in a hostel during my visit to NYC last week. It was located near 95th and Broadway and it was called the Continental Hostel. The room only consisted of a bunk bed and a dresser. It was so small that you could probably reach your roommate even if they were on the other side of the room. I would not recommend staying in a hostel. They are the worst. If you want to stay in a cheap hotel go to priceline.com. The other hotel I stayed in was the Exchange Hotel near the WTC site. It was about 20 bucks more and it was so much better! The room was huge and modern. It also had a desk, microwave, mini fridge, recliner, and a plasma TV! The hotel even had a free breakfast bar.

i don't understand, yet you're allowed to stay in a lodge. my cousins stay in new york, the state, and that they went right down to the city and spent an prolonged weekend there without issues.
