Start with a basic course on CD. Pimsleur Japanese Comprehensive is a great one to begin with. Once you have a foundation, start talking to as many Japanese speaking people as you can.

I have found a great place for that is your local Sushi bar. All you need is the courage to try and you will learn. You will find that most people appreciate your effort to learn there native language and will help you.

I'd take some classes first then live there. I would also find a Japanese immigrant to teach you all of the stuff that could get you in trouble so you that you wont say something that is an insult or that is taboo. He/she can also tell you about the idioms of the language. Case in point, knew a lady who took 3 yrs of French, did the foreign exchange student thing, went to France and accidentally told her foreign exchange family that she was pregnant.

Either go to Japan or Take a Japanese class, but whatever you do don't try to learn from a software program. They don't work!

How about language cds and books. The CD will have someone telling you exactly how to say the things that you would need to know (the very basics of getting by). They also have these computerized gagets that you type in what you need in English and then it can translate into a different language.
Good Luck and have fun!
