I’ve heard it said that God talked directly to the men who wrote the Old Testament, and that it is the literal word of god.
I’ve also heard that Jesus came to earth and changed things. That he gave us the New Testament, and that Christians belief this New Testament is the one to follow and it cancelled out what came before.
So my question is why does and all knowing God need a do-over? Couldn’t he get it right the first time?
And please don’t get all pissed off. This question is based on answers I have read on this site.

A persons religion is never based on logic, therefore it is impossible to justify the choice of faith using any proof. mainly due to the fact that there is no proof to be found.

Just keep this in mind that the new testament is based on the old testament and the old testament is based on earth based older Pagan religions. Pagan were there first and we have not changed much since the beginning. Christianity is and has always been a changing religion based on the needs of the few to control the masses. A religion written by humankind to reflect what the select corrupt few sees as a need for society is not something that needs to be followed as much as it needs to be despised and banned. So in answer to your question god needs regular do-overs in order to reflect the needs of the 'christian" society. Because society is constantly changing.

You see, it was Gods word until somebody came up with another improved Gods word. They got it all wrong the first time. It's the same with the Koran, which is also Gods word. So you have 3 versions of Gods word, a lot of which is the same, and a lot of which is different.

Are any of them the "real" Gods word. Well depends who you ask. But honestly a lot of the new testament was written long after Jesus died, by people that had never met him, or lived when Jesus lived. Some of it was written in the name of those from his time 100s of years later. So is the New Testament Gods word? Logic says no. But religion isn't logical so you be the judge.

I take the old testament in earnest, the new one came much later and is basically taken from the old one,it is written in original Aramaic ,when translated to greek, latin and other languages it looses a lot of meanings , words change ,what a person understood as 'sky 'two thousand years ago is different on how we relate to it today. Take the word 'gay' for example ,when I went to high school it meant ,happy , now is used to designate people who like the same sex! So words change in meaning. The Essenes where Jesus of Nazareth was a member wrote in codes, not for the masses , so we have still a long way to go to fully comprenhend the Bible! Hugs.

No, God told prophets what to write for the Old Testament and then later on He had more prophets write down the rest of what His disciples did, and yes like the other person said, "its a fulfillment of the Old Testament", and whats going to happen in the end days. He didn't need a do-over, He needed to add more. Christians shouldn't be forgetting about the Old Testament, both the New and Old are VERY important in your walk with God.

It's usually the "Cults " that say the OT is null and void, but both Peter and Paul say it was written to teach the future of what was to come in symbolic language in some cases.Other cases it literal. All the prophecies but a few have been literally fulfilled to this day including ,Israel coming back to the land after being out of it for 2000 years. It's not that He didn't get it right ,He does things in time.and as Peter says "A day with the Lord is a 1000 yrs and a1000 yrs as but a day".See,it's only been a couple of days!
PS to Jewishgirl...When and where did G-d change the blood atonement?(And don't say swinging a chicken, puhleeze)He never did and thereis no atonement without the shedding of blood, where's yours?Yom Kippur is soon..no?
This was said in love.

saying the God of the Old testament is different than the God of the new is a very old position and calle Marcionism
the followers are Maricons (promounced martians)

and no

the God of the Old and New are the same, the God of the Old testament and Jesus are the same in character and Jesus showed us what God is really like in character

the Old testament command us to Love mercy... the Old testament says love your neighbor as yourself.. there is justice and mercy in both

God is the same, the emphasis seem might be different at different times... the New Testmaent makes God's mercy crystal clear... the Old Testament makes God's justice and faithfulness crystal clear... but both do both

God is not different in the Old and New, it is more the theology of the first glance that needs to dig in more, dive into the deep waters and find out what God is really like

While God talked directly to men in the OT He also did so in the NT.
ex through Jesus and also Paul on the road to Damascus
But God's words were not always literal in the Old or New Testiment (sources #1)
.
Jesus did come to earth to change things, In some ways to change them back the truths and virtues that were revealed before #2 In some ways to bring new teachings that mankind was now ready for #3 . And in some ways to prepare us for the future (now)#4.

The answer I believe is:
Its not God that needs "a do-over" its us, with our free will to choose not so healthy ways of living and relating to each other.#5

5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said,
Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies,
bless them that curse you,
do good to them that hate you,
and pray for them which despitefully use you,
and persecute you;
Jesus (King James Bible, Matthew)

To put it as simple as I can. The Old and New Testament go hand in hand. Read Psalms 40

Verse seven (7) says:
(Christ speaking)
Then said "I, Lo, I come, in the VOLUME of the BOOK it is written of Me."

God gave us free will, when Eve ate the apple it severed the ties between us and God. i think he set it up that way. So we would need him. Jesus brings us back to God through his blood.

Good Question!!
