Brasso is what we used in the Army, but I think that automotive buffing compound works better, also leaves a little wax to prevent tarnish. Brasso is just a paste made of ground pumice and petroleum distillates.

I used Brasso. The trick to keep your finger smudges from the clean areas is to wear your glove inserts or any glove that has a soft fabric. They don't leave finger prints. It'll look funny, but it worked for me. Be sure to keep those gloves and a soft cloth handy for when it does get smudged.

Use brasso until you can afford StayBrite insignia. Those have a protective layer, so all you have to do is wipe them clean and you are set.
