I've been on a handful of dates with a guy, and I found out his birthday is on Monday, and we're having dinner on Friday night. I was thinking it would be nice to make him a card and bake him some cupcakes as a surprise. Is it too early to do something like that or should I just call him and wish him a happy birthday?

I really like him and I think this has great potential to go somewhere...we talk every day, we've seen each other twice in a week...he's clearly interested in me, and I'm also interested in him.

It's kind of hard to say... depends on how intense your meetings have been. If you're both totally into each other and are having one of those rare 'you're just like me' experiences then I'd say go for it.
But if you're still just kind of feeling each other out and haven't made 'real' progress, it might seem a bit forward and scary to him.
Maybe just give him one cupcake with a candle and keep the card simple, don't go into depth about how you think he might be the one, has already changed your life or anything like that.
You can also say something like you didn't know if he had real birthday plans and you just wanted to make sure someone did something nice for him.
Good Luck

A card and cake or cupcakes would be fine, but nothing else yet. It's way too early. You don't want to scare him off. Men like to be the hunter.

You haven't been dating for that long, so baking cupcakes that you both can share is a great way to give him a gift without feeling like you went overboard.
HAVE FUN! =D

I would just stick to the card...a very nice one...and the phone call on the Monday. Baking? Too soon.

If you want to give him a card and bake him cupcakes that should be fine - it isn't like you are going and buying him something really expensive. He should be fine with it.

Stick with the minimum but make sure you recognize it. I made a HUGE mistake by drawing a picture of this guy's damn dog for his birthday, and he freaked out - claimed I was trying to trap him, etc. Heck, I was just drawing a damn picture, cuz that's what I do! He totally freaked.
Oh yeah, and he was a jacka$$.
