Without going super technical, LCD is a bit "thinner" than plasma - meaning the TV is actually about 1 inch less deep than a plasma. Plasma delivers warmer, richer color at wider viewing angles. LCD is the same delivery mechanism as a laptop - so if you have seen one of those you can relate the quality. Many LCDs can be hooked up to your computer via VGA cables as well. LCD pixels can go bad over time, so the higher quality the set, the longer it will last. However, plasma is infamous for "burn in". If you were to keep CNN headline news on for extended periods of time, you would see that bottom news ticker "burned in" or "ghosted" permanently at the bottom of the screen.
You have to keep a picture in the same position on the screen for a long period of time for this to happen, but if it does, your home theater looks like garbage forever more.
If you don't abuse it, plasma will probably give you a more enjoyable viewing experience. Hitachi, Samsung, Philips and Sony make nice plasmas.

There are difference between the pictures on LCD, DLP and plasma sets, as well as differences between flat-screen and rear-projectors. People have strong opinions on this and will argue endlessly about which is better. The fact is they ALL look good. They look different (a little), but it is mostly a matter of taste as to which you like better. So go and look at the sets, see what you like, and don't worry about which type is "better".
