honesty integrity and a the ability to swap between being a hard a*se and sympathetic. to be honest though there are a lot of people in the job not like this but take it from me they rarely get anywhere. you need to be able to look at a situation and not take a side. you need to be able to get a correct balance between facts and feelings and use them together, you have to think on your feet and be willing to put in the hours to suceed (and not worry about being hated when doing it all)

I would say that police are a necessary evil. They are vital and they don't all suck. Unfortunately, a huge number of crappy ones have tainted the entire profession.

Personally, an ideal policeman would possess honesty and integrity. Maybe a genuine regard for humankind.

I think those might be hard to come by.

a point to the second answer in the list... yes the police have a screening policy in the uk. in order to pass you have to evidence
1 Effective communication
2 Community and customer focus
3 Personal responsibility
4 Resilience
5 Problem solving
6 Respect for race and diversity
7 Teamworking

if you can't evidence the above you wont get in. personally i dont think those criteria stop good people getting in the force. i'm a good person with extreemly high standards, and i'm also a police woman.

as for what makes a good policeman? i could say its about being honest, hardworking, fair and impartial, someone who takes their position seriously. and it is. but to be honest what makes you be able to come to work everyday and keep doing the job day in day out is being able to forget about the days crap when you go home and recharge for the next day. because its not as easy as you might think

The Police:
I have been where you fear to be
I have seen what you fear to see
I have done what you fear to do
All these things I have done for you

I am the man you lean upon
The man you cast your scorn upon
The man you bring your troubles to
All these men I've been to you.

The man you ask to stand apart
The man you feel should have no heart
The man you call the man in blue
But I'm just a man, just like you.

And through the years I've come to see
That I'm not what you ask of me
So take this badge and take this gun
Will you take it?....will any one?

And when you watch a person die
And hear a battered child cry
Then do you think that you can be
All the things you ask of me?

I saw the above in a RCMP store, the author is not known but I am proud to be associated with the sentiments and yes I've been there, done it and got the T shirt.

Honesty, Integrity, Empathy, Good Knowledge, Patience, Enquiring Mind, Desire to Help, Courage, Common Sense, Communication Skills, Understanding, Open Mind, Non-Judgemental, Ability to do Paperwork, Some basic Computer Skills, Individuality, Discretion, Fitness .................... there are so many attributes and if you could find ONE police officer with ALL of them, they would be BRILLIANT.

However, each officer has different skills to add to policing of this, or any other country.

A good Police Officer is the one who protects the community and is dedicated to making a difference.

Maintaining four principles: Honour. Integrity. Courage & Trust.

Enforcing law with excellence in policing.

It's a very dificult job and I respect them. When I meet one I let him/her know that they are appreciated... they are too - human and make mistakes just like everyone else. There is a percentage of evil in ever profession... it's life.

Stay safe. - Maryam

EDIT: 'on thin ice' you have brought tears to my eyes as I have personally asked RCMPs for autographs when I had the Honour to do so. I will never forget how happy they were to see how much I appreciated them.

The same as what it takes to make a good police woman, i expect!!! You put a question on here earlier saying you wanted to be a copper. You're female... you counting yourself out, now?

Honesty, integrety, stamina, ability to be a negotiator but take no cr*p at the same time, to be brave, to be good at paperwork, to be flexible.
