You may want to consider looking at what smaller dogs various rescue groups have available before limiting yourself to a certain breed. I have seen good and downright horrible dogs of many of the breeds mentioned here, so that is why I would look more for temperament than a specific breed. Especially if you have children. Temperament can vary drastically in a breed if the dog has been poorly bred or not properly socialized, so they may be able to match you up with small dogs of various that is exactly what you are looking for and good with kids.
To get an overview of breeds in general though, there is a wonderful website called www.yourpurebredpuppy.com . This can give you a good overview of many of the smaller breeds and the health and temperament issues they encounter, including housetraining difficulties.
Good luck!

My husband and I have a miniature doberman-pinscher, who is very loyal and sweet. We also have a jack russell terrier mix, who is a pretty active dog.
My mom has a shitzu, and is only about 7lbs. He is so mellow, and just likes to cuddle.
It all depends on the type of dog you want.... active, mellow, smart, etc. You should definitely do some research on different breeds before you make your decision. You want to make sure that the breed you choose fits your lifestyle.

small dog? let me think...a yorkshire terrier is a good dog to have. they tend to be a little hyper, but since you have a seven year old, she might be able to keep up with one. when i was younger i had a yorkie, and i cannot stress enough how important it is to use a leash when you take them outside. they have so much energy, that they just want to run around all over the place. if you have a safe, fenced in yard, you should be fine.

Pugs are a cool purebred that would do well with a smaller child. I have seen some adorable mixes at the shelters that would love a nice home. And they tend to be smaller and have wonderful attitudes.

A Westie-Bichon is oveable, cute, friendly, and stays really small in size! it doesnt bark, it loves companions, and gets easily excited! Westie-Bichons love playing with children, and act like children too! I know, because I have a Westie-Bichon. They get along with other animals, but get him/her spayed, otherwise when mating season comes, you'll be sorry!
Hope this helped, olivia
