What does "Get a life" mean anyway??? Since life meaning existing and soul is also life, so how come no one says "Get a soul"? "Get a soul" sounds more spookier. How about "Get a spirit"? And also, why would anyone say "Get a life" anyway to someone is living? If they have a life, they would be responding already since they are living or ignoring the message. If they are dead, they cannot even respond. So how come people do not want to say "Get a life" to their beloved dead ones since they need a life literally. Those dead people cease to exist. ~.~

I heard William Shatner is the 1st one to actually say it. I hate people who misuse that phrase. They need to start saying that phrase to being who is dead since they are dead and need a life. Too bad that they cannot have a life since they are dead unless you know of a way to reincarnate the person back to the living then that person will have a life again.

Ok.. first of all where are you from?? This saying is just part the wierd, wacky and every changing English languge. It refers more to the fact of the way a person lives her/his life. Not the actual act of living. Instead when someone says to "get a life" they are refering to become busy in what ever it is you may like. To make friends, enjoy a hobby, join a club. But most of all to have a busy life, most likely to stay away from theres. Americans are very territorial about friends and things they believe they can call their own. So they you are not being told to be alive and live (breath, eat, sleep) but to enjoy life in your own way, hence getting your own life.

In reference to your question, because you are a liveing breathing creature, doesn't always mean that you have a life. Living, and breathing just simply means that you are alive. Having a life means having goal, objectives, hobbies, achievements, things that are imortant to you. Having a focus is also an essential part of having a life. Sitting around popping beer cans, or girl watching, or even fishing are forms of having a life, but having a productive life is actually having a life.

When we tell a person to "get a life" , we are telling him/her that he/she is spending way too much time and effort on .....and showing way too much interest in.....something that is trivial, unimportant, and insignificant. No one else would bother with it.
