High blood pressure runs in my family. Smokers and nonsmokers alike eventually get it. I saw a programme on BBC dealing with garlic and its effects on blood pressure. This girl took garlic in many different ways and her blood pressure was taken after the suitable time had elapsed. It transpired that the only type of garlic that reduced her blood pressure was eating raw cloves.

Right! So now I'm lashing the raw garlic into me! ( Well, a crushed clove every night so that the odour won't be too bad in the daytime. ) There is murder in the house! They are all going mad! These same people will eat chinese curry which smells awful but my bit of garlic is causing war. I think they are selfish and I refuse to give in. I've also explained to my kids that since they have my genes, they too will need to look after their blood pressure. By the way, I get enough exercise. What would you do in this situation?
I dont really know which category to put this under.

When the BBC thing was done, they tested garlic in all forms but the only way it was effective was when eaten raw. I wish I could take the capsules but they remove the smell from them and, apparently, its the smelly bit that does all the good work!

As for the red wine answer: if only that were true! My doc says DON'T drink.

Sweetheart, it is like this. You do what you have to do to stay healthy. You don't want to have to start taking high blood pressure medicine. I say rock on and eat the stuff. Because in the end you are doing it not only for you but for all of them 'cause I know they would want to keep you around as long as possible..

Wait a minute. Do YOU have high blood pressure? If so, there are lots of things to do to lower it. Garlic is just one way and isn't nearly as effective as say, lower your weight by 10% of your total body weight, stop drinking coffee, use meditation to relax every day (the number of exclamation points in your question indicates you are in an excitable situation!). Yes, exercise is very good but total weight is more interesting. Finally, there are many, many drugs that have been well tested that are proven to lower blood pressure. Talk to your doctor about your blood pressure. Garlic is not the most effective way to handle this.

Garlic is great! I had high blood pressure I was on medication to get it down, I also had to change my nutrition and lifestyle. My blood pressure has not been high in four years, but I still eat a raw garlic clove maybe three times a week. i cook everything with garlic and I love it. I do not feel it stinks up the kitchen but it does do damage to my breath. I do take altoids and brush heavily when I do eat the garlic. ANY WHO I LOVE GARLIC your house must be filled with VAMPIRES lol!

there is only one cure an it ain't garlic.

reduce the stress in your life. people may say smoking and drinking is a big killer... well, stress is the biggest, and they don't tell anyone that.

chill out, smoke a spliff, and learn how to play an instrument or paint a picture. maybe write down what you're thinking about. self expression is the best feeling in the world, and so therapeutic. i have nothing whatsoever and my blood pressure is fine. laughter is very good for you too, and a couple of drinks with some good light hearted friends.

and get a less powerful job. what use is a widescreen plasma tv and a hot tub if you're dead of a pulmonary heart attack?
i don't know your situation but i find that in my experience high blood pressure is usually caused by high levels of responsibilty and pressure. sit down and take a load off. watch neighbours. relax man!
be like the fonz - aaaayyyy!
and know that i will always love you

Garlic is really good for you, and they'll ultimately get used to it. I grew up in an Italian household, and everyone always smelled like garlic. It's not all that bad, really. Keep eating it - forget what everyone else thinks. Then, add a little into the things they eat. They won't even notice at first. They'll get healthy, you'll get healthy, and then you can tell them to stop bothering you about because they'll be eating it to!

You have not said whether you have actually got high blood pressure or not.
If you have high blood pressure, you have not said whether taking the garlic has actually lowered it.
Taking garlic is a cure rather than prevention.
So it is therefore somewhat hard to give you an opinion !
Diet, lifestyle and your BMI will affect BP more than garlic will.

I personally have never been offended at the smell of garlic. If it keeps you healthy then why not. People are always so quick to tell you that you stink of garlic when there is loads of people around stinking of BO and nobody saying a word.

i understand, it runs in my family to, what you should do is eat less red chilli powder, and less salt, drink more water, and when cooking eat white fish only, there is also the fact that you can get fresh aloe vera plants, buy one let it grow, and once every week cut a peice off skin it and fry it in honey, then also, green tea made with garlic, so drink that every evening and it should help, what you do is buy china green tea, u can get them in tea bags, in a pan pour water enuff for a cup and put two cloves of garlic and one tea bag of green tea, leave it to simmer for 3 minutes with a lid on top, and then put 2 table spoons of honey in a cup (more if needed as it is a slightly bitter tea) and then pour in the tea, sieve it, eat the garlic drink the tea, and you should be ok

I'm not saying this to be cruel but, You probably stink of garlic throughout the day as the odour will seep through your pores. Try capsules instead.
