I've been taking Depakote/Epilim since mid-2000 and haven't had these sorts of problems, but mostly I've been on a low dose (400-800 mg/day). Report this side effect to your doctor and make sure s/he takes it seriously. Perhaps once you've stabilized you can take less of the drug?
I've had to take an antipsychotic a couple of times to halt a manic episode. At 2 mg/day my blood pressure got so low I once almost passed out, but I tolerate .5 - 1 mg/day with no noticeable effects, so before you give up on a drug, tinker with the dosage.

That is one of the side effects. Talk to your doctor to see if you can get off the medication or substitute it with something else. But the doctor will have to out weigh the risk and benefits with you.
