It is pronounced Gam (like "ham") well (like "well") with the stress on the initial syllable. I share your amazement that anyone could get it wrong.

Maybe they're worried it sounds a little close to damn well?

I don't know, it seems easy to me, and it's got a pretty nice meaning, if I could just figure out what a gam is I could do it well. Seriously, with well on the end of the name it means something good.

My last name is pronounced EXACTLY the way it is spelled, but there's always someone who'll pronounce it 5 different ways before they get it right.
